We didn't know too much about Sands Lake when we arrived, so we just drove in a few minutes and found a beautiful lake with a prime campsite next to it. We pitched our tent, stoked the fire, and didn't see another soul during our entire time there. We had our car parked right up next to our site. We explored a bit walking around on the foot traffic trails, which is beautifully wooded and shaded. Didn't explore too much more of the area, but hopefully more reviews will tell of others' experiences here in this beautiful area. It's all backcountry, but it was perfect for the evening-- complete removal from the city!
We tent camped and were able to park our car right at the site. There were few forested areas available, and it was also difficult to find a flatter piece of land. Felt pretty close to nearby neighbors, and the space was pretty open without any dividing trees to even set up hammocks. There is a nice trail walk through a residential area that empties you into downtown Ludington. However, I've camped in better places (Buttersville Campground) in Ludington, and since this place is pretty removed from the beach, I would say to seek out a better campground.
Requires about a 30-45 minute hike in, so pack accordingly! We slept on the beach, which we didn't realize was illegal, but there are plenty of woodsy spots. There are sand dunes, beach, and woodsy spots. The perfect getaway, with plenty of space to spread out and explore.
Don't let online reviews scare you away! A group of friends and I camped here for a weekend, and it was an incredible location. I've camped elsewhere in the Ludington, MI area, and nothing compares to Buttersville! Family atmosphere, and located right on the lakeshore. We walked down a huge flight of stairs and were right on the beach, which had space to sprawl out for the day. Affordable camping, we got a reservation the week of. Great place!
