This campground is only a couple miles north from fort Bragg and then just a bit further south is the cute coastal town of Mendocino. It’s almost surprising how close to the water this campground is. There are several small Foot trials leaving the campground and after passing through a small Thick of forest ( where we saw a huge group of deer) and then instantly you are transported to large dunes and sea cliffs. Typical SP with decent bathroom house and coin showers. There is a small visitor center that never opened during our stay. The park had very few people camping in March 2023, as it was still Raining after an incredible season of storms. If full- it could feel like it lacked privacy between sites.
We discovered this campground 4 years ago and were so excited to return this year. It remains in our top 5 favorite campgrounds. It is situated directly along avenue of the giants scenic route. So the only possible
Negative would be the occasional road noise.
Typical SP campground with full bathroom structures and coin op showers. This campground does not have a dump station nor any hookup
Sites. They limit RV and trailer
Length to 24ft with good reason. The road through camp is narrrow and windy and, literally, curving through a redwood grove. There really isn’t a bad site here. The high teen and 50’s are closest to the avenue. The mid 20-30 are along a creek. Sites can appear full online, but the host and ranger will
Post a daily list of sites not booked or
Vacated that can be FCFS on the day for 1 night.
The visitor center for Humboldt redwood SP is adjacent to this campground and has some great wildlife and history exhibits as well
As a small Gift shop.
Immediately across the street are ancient groves and nature trail.
It’s truly a wonderland
Getting to this campground is an adventure alone. It’s beautiful and right along these wind swept sand beaches. But each site is blocked by huge wooden pylons- there is barely room to even park off the “road” at your site.
We booked site 21. Not sure we will be able to stay overnight in a 24ft rv.
Behind the wooden pylons each site has a large flat tent are, fire ring, table and food locker.
There is one road in and it is several narrow miles.
No host on site. Bring your own firewood.
We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of March during an unusually wet and cold winter. So it was, literally, freezing at night. The sites are situated among towering redwoods. Which blocks the amazing clear night skies, but offer there own beauty.
It was great! The nearby towns or phill and boonville are super cute.
We are a family of 4 in a 24ft RV. This park is very accessible with many short and easy trails. The hike to see the preserved “hermit huts” were very cool.
Fire wood is available from the camp host who even takes Venmo! Life saver when we always seem to forget cash.
There are 2 campground loops. We stayed in azalea and The best sites IMO were 12,19,20. They are large with separate table and fire pit areas and on the outside edge of the loop- so minimal foot traffic and neighbors.
Each site is really big and everything is clean and well maintained. Nearly all sites have electrical and water with a dump station located near the entrance. Each site has a table and fire pit as well as shade from trees. The park hosts the caverns and cave tours and a museum about the area. We are headed on a cave tour today! Nice trails surround the park and clearly marked for either hiking, bike or equestrian.
We pulled in late at night to site 47. The campground has terrible direction and signage. Our site was described as being RV accessible, but it had a very steep entrance and then a small level Pad at the top of the steep driveway. We are in a 24ft rig and scraped badly making the steep graded approach.
The site had cool
Steps up to a separated fire pit and table area, which was probably quite nice.
The campground is super tight. Sites are very close. Looked like each site has a bear locker, fire pit and table.
We visited on a weekend and peak season and it was completely filled with multiple vehicles overflowing at each site. We slept and then moved on the next morning.
Stayed in the first loop at site 3. These are considered double size site and are also double the price. $84/ night for a USFS camp site with flush toilets in a neighboring loop and overflowing trash cans.
The campground is walking distance to the waters edge. It has double and quadruple sized sites within cedar bluff and the lupine side has more typical single sites. All sites have a table and fire pit. Not all loops have a designated bathroom building.
The single sites are very tight. I’m not sure anyone with a towable set up could fit, maneuver and set up comfortably.
The double size sites are def the way to go, but the price seems way too high for not having hookups or even adequate facilities. Bear lockers were not at every site.
This entire area along bass lake is crowded and the visitors do not take care or respect the grounds and lake. Trash and litter can be seen all around. The trash cans over flow and bagged trash was outside the bear safe dumpsters.
The hosts were extremely friendly and helpful.
This campground was quaint and small. The hosts were amazing and the pit toilets were the cleanest I have ever seen!
We were redirected to this campground from Teton canyon due to aggressive bear activity and we were traveling with a soft side pop up trailer.
The site was further from the Tetons and mountains than we wanted.
The sites were outside a reservoir directly on the river. There is an upper area closer to the road with electric and water. But it was basically a big parking lot for rvs. Down below We snagged a great site tucked between huge trees. It had a fire pit, picnic table, level tent site as well as an oversized parking spot that was easy to level the trailer.
This campground was a last minute detour for us since there was stormy weather hitting our destination to the north. What a lovely surprise. We were here in the beginning of June and the bugs were not bad at all. It was windy, so that probably helped with the bugs. There is a loop for rent camping and a large loop with hookups. We stayed in a hookups site with our pop up tent trailer. Every spot is nicely thought out and spaced out. There really isn’t a bad spot. We saw bison all over the island and even in the campground. It was super cool. Highly recommend this hidden gem of a campground!
