Small and just right

$5 a night but only 6 pull in spots to choose from with all being about the same as far as benefits. Tables and fire pits in each one & 4/6 have shade.

One pit toilet which was very clean during my visit.

I pulled in on a Saturday @ 6pm and only one spot was taken so lucky me.

NO cell service whatsoever here either(AT&T)

Location works for exploring the local areas up and down the fork

Be aware you can reserve spots here

There it’s some misinformation about reservations at this CG but you can definitely reserve spots. The downside is getting here and having most spots reserved and UNUSED for the night. One of the many campgrounds that screw over the random camping traveler with a horrible reservation system but hey at least they got their money, right?

As for my experience I was able to grab one of 2 open spots early on a Wednesday. Unfortunately they’re easily the 2 worst spots in the entire campground and it’s not even close but I was only staying overnight so not a big deal.

Campground is clean and nicely setup with good space between each spot and not overly jam packed with spots.

Dumont lake is nearby which is great to fly fish, canoe, sup, etc. $5 for a day pass but they do accept the Annual pass which a lot of us have

CG has water, cell service, and nice and clean bathrooms.

Plenty of pull through sites if you’re rig needs that otherwise you have pull in sites as well

Good location in a beautiful area so enjoy your stay if you can.

Barren empty landscape perfect for camping

As I usually do in places like this I will advise you should have an suv or truck and 4wd before even bothering with this area.

It’s remote as can be and there isn’t a single thing out here including cell service

As far as the camp site well it’s about a 40mi trek through the empty desert to even get to the bridge and along the way there are numerous areas to get your rig pulled off to the side and camp it out however not every one is perfect so just do some hunting for the one that suits you

The bridge itself is pretty cool and apparently there are hot springs somewhere around here from what I’ve read but I didn’t search for them or see any signs. There are also some old structures but be respectful and keep ‘em protected

No water until the verde river so keep that in mind. Cell service is non existent as well. There is shade at spots due to the local fauna but for the most part it’s barren and you need to prepare for the trip out here wisely. Nearest entrance is off 17 as well as amenities so stock up and have fun!

Bring a strong rig and enjoy the solitude

My last stop before I continued my trip into California and what an awesome stop it was. I’ve spent a month in Arizona roaming around and each area has me fantastic!

I’d immediately recommend having a truck or suv so you can really explore the entire area. I was camping in my overland Tahoe on this stretch and it handled the area well. My buddies has a Tacoma and Land Cruiser respectively so we were set.

It’s all about exploration out here. Lots of RVs bringing their play toss out here so you’ll run into a lot of dirt bikes and utvs which is awesome. Numerous mining areas and ranch buildings still dot the area and are fun to respectfully explore. Sunsets are beautiful, shade is non existent, and rocks aplenty. Cell service was non existent for majority of my trip, and no water that we came across. Saguaros and ocotillos are everywhere which add to the AZ landscape

Do your best to understand the local rules and regs here and abide by them. This is an area we need to respectfully use so we have it for decades to come

Arizona camping at its finest

If I had to describe Arizona camping then this would be the perfect campground description. Such a beautiful area with a pristine CG to boot.

More red than green, awesome views of the Colorado as well as easy access which I benefited from due to the float trip we came for, and wonderful people camping here in numerous different setups. Everything from vans to RVs to toy haulers and cars with tents.

Clean restrooms and some of the best in the entire state IMO, as well as water and for the big rigs there’s a dump station but my site didn’t have any other RV amenities so I’m pretty sure that’s it

Couple great hikes nearby that give even better views of the area and if you can handle the heat I’d recommend them

Fishing is per the usual in the Colorado and it wasn’t too great for my trip but probably more my fault

Marble Canyon is nearby if you need anything but it’s extremely quiet right now

It stayed pretty busy over my 2 day stay. When I pulled in on a Thursday I was able to grab 1 of 6 empty spots. By the time i left Saturday it was full constantly. As usual my cell service wasn’t very dependable

Incredible camping with some work

One of the best sites in all of Az. This is specific to dispersed camping around the lake as that is what we took part in. Lots of available areas where you can find seclusion and quiet surrounded by a beautiful area. We spent two nights off the lake that took some hunting to find but well worth it.

No facilities so please pack out everything you bring in and keep it better than how you found it. There are facilities around but if you’re dispersed they won’t necessarily be there for you.

Fishing was great and the lake was beautiful. Primo spot and area.

Get there early and be rewarded

I don’t pay for camping too often but glad I did here. Just passing through on an AZ trip and decided to pay for a couple nights just to relax.

This CG is huge with 60+ sites (can’t remember exactly how many) however they do fill up quick prior to the weekend. It’s in a wonderful area off the Highway and feels quiet and peaceful. Hosts were excellent, bathrooms were clean, and everything else was about as perfect as it gets. Majority of people here were respectful and kept noise down so it was great to enjoy the surroundings.

Overall this is one of the better paid CGs I’ve been to and wouldn’t hesitate to stop here again

Quiet and perfect spot for a weekend getaway

Such a nice quiet campground which I love to camp at if I have to pay for one which isn’t too often.

About 20 spots give or take with most being big enough for your bigger rigs.

Clean Toilets, water, etc and all the amenities you expect from a FS CG.

Spots have the usual table and fire ring setup and most are spaced perfectly far enough apart

There is a small lake just north of the CG which makes for a good evening or morning stroll. The road in can be a little busy but nothing really bothersome and the CG is set far enough back that you won’t even notice it. My cell service with ATT was bad or non existent as well so plan ahead.

Great for a quick & easy camp out

Swung through here on my way to Phoenix after driving 13hrs. Middle of the week so was easy to find an open spot and honestly I want too picky. There were still a good amount of people camping so I can only imagine weekends or prime times this place is hectic

Good flat spots all around with fire rings. Road can be a lil severe in spots but not bad at all. Can definitely tell this place gets a lot of use and there is trash here and there so do your best to pack out EVERYTHING you bring in

Best spots are on the cliff edge overlooking the valley but also taken pretty quick sooo cross your fingers.

Overall a great area if you just need to get some rest but I don’t think I’d come here for a weekend camp trip

Dispersed and barren

First and foremost keep your eyes on temperature and property in this area and make sure you’re setting up in used areas and not just driving all over the landscape

I camped here in June and thankfully I was prepared because it was a cooker and there isn’t a lot of shade or cover so you need to bring with you whatever you can to protect from the sun. Once you’re all setup then it’s really a nice quiet high desert landscape. Saw numerous snakes, lizards, and tons of different birds if you’re into that.

Hiking is fun and more exploration than anything. Dust in the drier months so anyone driving through will raise quite a bit and it’s usually atvs, side by sides, etc doing it.

No water, my cell service wasn’t great but I could get bars here and there

FR 552 Dispersed

Beautiful forest with plenty of dispersed sites all nicely spread out. Can get busier during prime times but for the most part is quieter than a lot of other areas around here. Traffic can be a nuisance in some spots probably kicking up loads of dust

There are some spots big enough for motorhomes and 5th wheels but do your due diligence first to make sure you don’t get caught awkwardly.

Also be aware during the warmer months this area is very dry, dusty, and prime for fires to start so take precaution.

I stayed here for 3 days on a trip and saw plenty of deer and other wildlife which is great.

No water, ok cell service in areas if that’s a concern, and nice seclusion. The further up you go the worse the road gets so keep that in mind too depending on your vehicle

Eh, there are better

About the same as camping on the west side of the hwy. There’s a ton of traffic, no respect from other campers who blast music, trash the forest, fire off guns at all hours, and overall not a great vibe.

Camped here over 2 days and the land, trees and forest are beautiful all around so IF you can find a secluded area you’ll be ok.

NO CELL service so take that into consideration when dispersed camping

If you want to see why our public land access gets revoked, camp here!

I could write a long review as I normally do but I’ll sum up this area for you quickly…

Positives - Plenty of dispersed camping spots, big and small, with shade.

Negatives - Everything else. I have never in my life camped in an area that has a little respect from campers as this. The amount of trash and destroyed land after people leave is incredible. When driving through on a Sunday afternoon it literally looks like the aftermath of a frat party with dozens of trash bags everywhere, beer cans and bottles strewn about, smoldering fires, shot up trees and targets, and the list goes on.

This is a summary of what is wrong with human beings. It’s easy access and giant spots so people who want to put zero effort into camping are able to come here easily and treat it like it’s a garbage dump.

Now let’s get to the traffic part of it. About a mile or 2 down the road it becomes harder to navigate specially for people who don’t off-road or camp much so majority of the camping population is located closer to the highway. Because of this if you’re camping anywhere around there you’re constantly eating dirt from people hauling through there in search of a spot to party at with their 20 friends in tow.

Most of this area will single handedly get Coconino shut down to public use and unless the NFS steps in to help mitigate this problem then it’ll be sooner than later

Be prepared and rewarded with a great spot

First and foremost I’d recommend only cars and suvs with 4wd to make the trek down to this spot. The road here is not made for bigger camping rigs or anyone that’s lacking experience driving off-road.

With that said if you make out here you’ll find a smaller CG w/ toilets that area clean, water during warmer months, as well as Rangers/hosts nearby that make sure everything is up to snuff.

Depending on what time of year you go and which site you choose could determine if you get A. Roasted by the sun and heat with no shade or B. Destroyed by mosquitoes.

I’ve camped at hundreds of places and this spot is one of the worst I’ve been to as far as mosquitoes are concerned so prep yourself for that.

The location is great for hiking and exploring as well as having the river for some fun.

I will advise to be lion and bear aware down here also. During my hike with my son we came upon a Lion kill site (deer) and then on a later hike had clear fresh tracks of a lion so they’re definitely active here and if hiking the river it gets pretty desolate

Most sites are drive in but there are a couple walk in sites as well. It’s about 50/50 whether you’ll have shade or not at your site.

First come first serve which IMO is a bonus and it’s such a haul to get here that usually you’ll have at least one site opened. When we came through here we got the last site so maybe it’s getting more popular as of late.

Each site has the usual table and fire ring but please check fire restrictions prior to lighting one up as this is a dry area and we want to make sure we do our part to keep it here.

Also PACK OUT ALL TRASH 👌🏼

Dispersed with some perks

Pulled into this area late one evening on a fall camping trip across Colorado. Totally expected it to be full but there were a couple areas left to setup thankfully. Everything in this area was filled by 630p however.

Clean toilet which is a bonus if needed and designated parking for each little area. Some sites needed to walk in a bit but no big deal.

Beautiful area all around and one in awhile you could hear road noise but not an issue. In fall you can’t hear Elk as well which is really cool and obviously being surrounded by the colors is great too.

Fire rings in most spots but double check fire bans before.

Primo area if it’s not busy

I’ve stayed at both the CG and along the road in the dozens of available (if your lucky and early) dispersed sites.

Prime area to have your base to hike to Ice Lakes (closed still due to fire) or off-roading around the San Juan’s.

It’s a really busy area but if you can grab one of the better sites in the CG you’ll feel like the only one there. Clean, usually good well mannered neighbors but since it’s an easy spot to get too you’ll get the opposite as well.

Beautiful river flowing down the valley as well which is always a bonus.

IF you can’t get a spot here at least you have options for dispersed camping all around which helps take the stress off but remember it is quite a busy area and that really is my only negative

Perfect retreat

I’d like to start by saying I’ve camped here since I could remember. I’ve watched it change throughout the years and it never has disappointed me.

Nicely spaced sites, wonderful lil stream that can be hit or miss with fish. I’ve had years where I’ve caught 20 and years with not a single bite.

Sites are spacious and most are set decently apart. Lots of hiking up and downstream as well.

The best part of this CG is being able to sit in the shadow of the highest peak in the lower 48. Watching the sun rise on its tips and vanish behind in the evenings is worth every bit of it.

It did the job

I don’t pay for campgrounds too much but needed to for a night here.

Clean bathrooms, clean campground and excellent hosts make this place a winner. The river access also added to the positives of the spot.

My only complaint is that a handful of sites are where you park on the pavement and have to walk down into your actual site. I was camping out of my Tahoe so it basically felt like I was camping in a parking lot. That’s on me though and my lack of knowledge on locations at this site. I made note of the spots with drive in access and next time I may need to use this CG I will choose a location that works better for me.

Not a lick of cell service here but access to Sedona is easy and overall this is a great area and CG for a weekend relaxing

One of my favorites

Spent a couple nights up here recently. I’d definitely recommend patience and a vehicle that you’re comfortable hitting ruts, rocks, etc with depending on which route you choose to take into this location.

As for the sites there are a handful of off shoots that go to the edge with the views everyone posts about. More than likely you won’t be alone and you will see a ton of other campers, and at the worst won’t have a site that’s worth the drive up there.

Cell service is pretty solid at the cliff sites as well and if you can get a good spot you’re in for a great camping trip.

It can still be pretty hot up there depending on the time of year. I camped in June and anything not in shade was a cooker.

There is also no way in n out of this location so if you forget something or have car trouble then you better have brought stuff to fix it’s yourself otherwise you’re hosed.

Don’t trash it, don’t burn the forest down and respect fire bans because this area is ripe for a big fire. Test the land with respect and we’ll be able to enjoy this area for decades to come.

The Double B’s

You know, beautiful & busy. Fantastic stretch with plenty of dispersed camping and nothing too close together. As far as camping goes off the divide this is one of the better areas. As usually it gets pretty busy with a lot of weekenders so expect the noise, trash, fires during fire bans, and lots of off road traffic, etc but it doesn’t take away from a great weekend up in the mountains. Lots of hiking and adventuring to be found all over

Cell service is up here but spotty and it is dispersed so plan accordingly.
