Stayed for 2 weeks so far. The manager and staff are so friendly and have a wealth of knowledge about the town, sightseeing, general needs and places to eat
I’m writhing this review on a Tuesday and the Maintenence Crews are in full swing. The campground is sparsely populated as expected for a weekday. The spots are nice and grassy, secluded, and some that may be used for multiple or large family camp outs. They have john boats and kayaks for rent on the weekends along with a camp store. The Forest office and camp store are both closed during the week. 2bars of 5G for AT&T users. Nice picnic 6’ table and fire ring at every site.
Camping, fishing, and boating, the big 3 in the mind of an outdoorsman. Now to catch that big one. A little warm and the bugs are getting ready for the dusk attack. There are gnats and flys during the day but nothing biting….yet
Great sites, privacy, and short walk to one of the greatest bathhouses I’ve visited within the TX SP system. Great trails and tons of exploring the park. From its Dino tracks in the river to the wide variety of birds and other wildlife.
Great place to stop over prior to visiting and possibly after you visit the Caverns. High clearance for the upper levels of the roadway but several vans could stay below close to the entrance. Quiet nights rest with occasional truck driving by on the roadway below
The site was large but only a portion could be used to level my truck. I had to use leveling blocks that stack and lock together so you can drive up onto them. To get the position I like for my solar I needed to raise the passenger side. It worked great. A little shade from a juniper tree and the world was all good. I woke up one morning to a hot air balloon landing in the valley below. It flew so close I thought I could touch it. AT&T was a solid 1/2 bar LTE. If you camp to be on your phone you’re doing it wrong 😂. JK. Enjoy the site
Quite dispersed camping. I was here in early March so I was the only one. Forested lots with nice shade but with some solar harvesting. Nice and clean, well maintained.
I’ve seen half a dozen people in 2 days. Hwy 89 below my site is somewhat busy with some engine brakes during the night. This is why I gave the site 4 stars.
The sites are large and each had a nice fire ring. Very private due to the juniper trees. Roads are in great shape and you should have no issue with a 2wd vehicle. The road to Honanki is washed out and areas may be questionable for 2wd. Nice area for a hike down a well travelled dirt/gravel road to Heritage sites. Palatki and Honanki Heritage sites have ancient ruins and rock art.
From sunset to sunrise it was absolutely an awesome spot to stay. Many spots, with or without shade. Great access roads with no issues for any vehicles.
The bird sanctuary was extremely busy even though it was overcast and cold. Great sightings of cardinals, green jays, hawks, and sparrows. Duck season was in full swing from dawn to dusk in the neighboring areas. Water level is extremely low, trails are nice, wide and clean. Restrooms and showers were in great working order, clean, and fully stocked of TP.
Several beginners bike trails. Fishing and boating at the lake. Great family area with picnic tables and playground. Nice beach area. Extremely nice staff always willing to do more for you to enjoy your stay. Large rig drive though. Each campsite has a covered area. Restrooms are clean and maintained. Visitation parking in each campsite loop.
I needed to stop and make a few repairs on my rig. I checked in at the gate without many questions. Was I a Vet? Yes. “That’s a discount and thank you for your service” the reply came. Are you over 62? Yes. That’s a discount. Just overwhelmed with the courtesy that was extended. Thank you beautiful lady at the gate.
Great place to fish, hike, and explore
