You'll need a high clearance vehicle to get here. It's one of the many back country car camping sites. Most of the time you won't see more than a handful of cars drive by the whole time you're there. The site gives panoramic views of the Sierra del Carmen, Chisos, Sierra Quemada, and the Mariscal mine.
If you're able camp here in the middle of the week for almost an interrupted solitude. Because there isn't much to do out there you may well be the only person. On the weekends when the weather is nice it will fill up for the most part. My favorite sites 27 for the privacy, followed by 24 because it's off the road and not close to other sites. The sites in the teens can be really close together, and some sites have better shade trees than others. In the month of April the bluebonnets are incredible and every time I've been there there have been tons of deer, probably the name sake of this place. Take a kayak with you for a nice calm paddle. There are a couple of pit toilets scattered throughout the campground but no showers. Most sites come with a fire pit but you'll need to bring your own firewood.
Sites 1-9 are beach front and separated by thick foliage for a tad bit of privacy. The other sites are just steps away from the beach and shaded by trees. I would consider this camp ground dog friendly as both times I've come here most people have dogs with them. Be prepared for chilly winds… Even if the forecast looks nice take layers! There are multiple trails all along the Pacific coast hwy as well as scenic overlooks that can keep you busy all day. The water is not suitable for swimming in along most of this shoreline due to dangerous rip currents and sleeper waves and there are many signs that will tell you so. This however does not detract from the experience of camping in this place. Sites are often booked for months in advance, particularly the first 9. There are a few flush toilets centrally located but no showers.
