Very Big Rig Friendly

Super convenient with easy access off Route 12. Lots of level, open spaces short distance from entrance. Great basic dispersed camping in a 34 ft Class A motorhome with towed vehicle. Had decent cell service with AT&T. There are, of course no amenities or even pit toilets, although there are two dumpsters for trash and the town of Escalante is nearby with groceries and other necessities. Would absolutely stay here again. Also- if you have a smaller vehicle that you can take down the main dirt road (washboarded, but otherwise not bad) you can get to several good hikes. We really enjoyed the Zebra slot canyon (gets VERY narrow) and also the tunnel. Amazing lighting near midday as the sun is directly overhead. Both are moderately strenuous hikes. Bring plenty of water.

Difficult to Access and VERY Limited Sites

Previous reviews led me to believe that there were “many sites” and that the sites were accessible by RV. I beg to differ. The main road in is not terrible, but I drove in (scouting with our towed SUV) for over a mile and found VERY few spots. Two spots were WAY too rocky for anything but a high clearance 4x4. One spot was flat but was also deep, soft sand- would not risk it in any vehicle. One side/spur road was very narrow and again had deep, soft sand. The ONLY place I found that was relatively flat, open and with an acceptable surface was about 1/2 mile in, could only accommodate maybe 4-5 campers, and was already filled with other campers.

Bottom line: Total waste of time and effort. Do not even bother if you have anything other than a tent.
NOTE: Found EXCELLENT spots (and many of them) less than 10 miles further down the road at the “Hole in the Rock Wayside” off Rt 12 just outside Escalante. Super easy access. Nice open, level sites.
