Known for its covered bridge and trout fishing. Nice quiet camping.
Watkins Glen is a public park. The campgrounds are near several waterfalls. There is a lengthy trail that you can hike for the main falls. Most people hike up to the top and take the bus back down. We went in the opposite direction. We had an early morning stay and beat the crowds. They were on their way up as we were approaching the bottom.
We have camped here with friends for the past 10 years. Great for families. The camp bus picks up and drop you off at the entrance to the campgrounds, and a short walk to the amusement park across the road. The roller coaster are fun.
There are single cabins, and double cabins as well as tent/hookup sites.
North South lake is one of the larger public camp grounds in New York. The sites are well spaced out. Great for families. The lake is huge.
Avoid holidays to avoid the crowds.
Acafia is a national park. The campgrounds are well maintained. There is ample hiking. Cyclists live the area too. One must visit Cadillac Mountain the view is stunning.
If you go into bar harbor try to avoid a day that the cruise ship is in. And make sure you walk across the Sand bar during low tide.
