Mosquito Haven

We stayed at site 17 which is a backpack site about a mile walk in from the nearest parking lot. The walk to the site was on a very nicely maintained trail, however we almost didn't make it there as we were all nearly carried away by mosquitoes. It didn't get much better when we got to our site, as they were everywhere.

Aside from the bugs, this was a great site withe a private beach access and great water to swim in on Castle Rock Lake. We didn't really treat this as a "backpack" site and we had enough gear for our family of 6, water toys and other accessories. That was a long walk with all that equipment.

For traditional backpackers, this would be a fantastic site, just make sure to bring the OFF spray.

Secluded Hideaway

We stayed at the Heron's Retreat campsite on the Caldron Fall Reservoir. We checked in at the Gov. Thompson State Park headquarters then launched our canoe from the boat launch at the state park. From there it was a short 1 mile paddle to our campsite on the northside of the lake. This site was wooded, with many tall trees which gave great shade, and also spots for hammocks. A fire ring and grate were included along with a picnic table and two chairs.

Bathrooms consisted of a pit toilet on site, about 40 yards back into the woods along a path.

This was our first time in "bear country" so we found trees to hang our food and garbage from to keep from attracting wildlife at night. Many downed trees provided enough firewood that we needed for the couple of days we were there.

The lake had very little boat traffic considering it was a holiday weekend when we stayed. This is definitely a site to consider if you are seeking seclusion as the next nearest campsite is a half mile paddle away.

Hiking Adventure

This campsite on the south side of the park is a mile and a half hike in from the nearest parking lot. The trails are nice, sometimes wide enough to walk side by side. Lots of rocks and roots along the paths, so watch those feet and ankles.

The campsite was great (site 10), right on the shores of Lake Michigan, could easily walk to the water for drinking water, or to rinse and wash dishes. The shoreline is mostly rocks and pebbles. This site didn't have a lot of tree coverage for shade, or trees for placing a hammock.

In May there is an abundance of flies that were swirling around. Found out later these are seasonal "may flies" and they are everywhere. Spiders were also a bit of a surprise at this site, and the number webs that would pop up overnight on every trail we hiked.

All that aside, we hiked over 26 miles of trails at this park and everyone was beautiful. However we were slightly disappointed that there weren't more views of the lakes, as most of the trails were set in just far enough off the coast to obstruct all views. All the trails were well kept, marked and easy to follow.

Kayak Life

This was a trip where very little of our time was spent at the campsite, and most of our time was on kayaks on the lake itself. The campsite was very open, and very close to neighboring sites. The site has many tall trees and a very high canopy with little to no underbrush for privacy from neighboring sites. Many other campsites were hammock camping due to the abundance of size appropriate trees.

Bathroom and shower facilities were close by and well kept.

For us this trip was about the time on the water, and the lake was calm and beautiful. The campground has an easy access boat launch for power boats and paddle boats. The steep cliffs and rock formations make for some great views while paddling.

Picture perfect along the Mississippi River

This campground has beautiful views along the Trempealeau river flowage and the Mississippi River. Campground is along the Trempealeau river, and has river views but not river access. There is no beach on site, which is a downer for families that want to play in the water. The hiking trails are very well marked.

The bathroom and shower facilities are great, and well kept which makes this a great family friendly place.

Kayak Adventure

Booked this trip with the sole purpose of kayaking the Pictured Rocks National Park. Camp site was great, had a great walk in site which was right in the beach of Lake Superior.

The facilities of the campground were great. The shower and bathroom facilities were clean, and easily accessible. Drinking water was readily available, as was fire wood for purchase.

Overall a great location and experience.
