Nice place to call home for a few days

We were looking for a nice quiet campground to act as a base for fishing the Big Wood and visits into Ketchum/Hailey/Bellevue. Wood River did not disappoint. It is located @ 10 miles north of Ketchum making it very convenient to run into town for supplies, meals, shopping, and entertainment.

The campground consists of a couple of connected loops with large shaded campsites. Some are along the Big Wood River. The roads and sites are well suited to smaller rigs. Big rigs might have a difficult time negotiating the loop road and finding sites deep enough to accommodate them.

The campsites and vaults were very clean and well maintained. The camp hostess during our visit was Peggy. She did a great job checking us in and making us feel welcome.

Dispute being near Highway 75 the road noise in the evenings was not a distraction. We camped in site 21 which is one of the farthest sites from the the highway. All in all we loved the forest feel and will return.

Free/donation based dump station

Free dump station behind the Shell Station off the north end of the Hailey Airport. Allows overnight parking for RV’s. Restrooms, potable water, and a picnic table.

Great Views - Big Sky

Nice clean riverside campground up in a wide low sloping valley. The campground is wooded but most of the sites do not have shade. This is a plus if you enjoy taking in the views and for solar. Could be a negative if there is no wind. It was a little overcast the day we visited and was very pleasant. Mosquitos were not an issue like down at Lola. Vault toilets were distributed around the camp loop. All were clean and well maintained. We will stay again.

Good base camp for activities

A Ranger in Challis told us about Pole Flat CG. We were looking for a small campground near, but not on the Salmon river, and off the main road.

There are 10 sites spaced nicely around a loop road. The CG is near the road to Custer but not on it so traffic noise is minimal.

All 10 sites are decent sized. Sites 5 and site 7 are deep and should accommodate large 5th Wheel TB’s and such. To access these two sites bear left coming into the CG. For most of the other sites bear right on the CG road.

The vault has men’s and women’s sides and appears to be recently painted. It was clean and well kept when we visited. There are two water pump jacks. Only the jack behind site 1 was working during our stay.

Happy Accident!

I booked Gilbert Ray based on campground location. We wanted to be close enough to Tucson for day trips yet far enough out to enjoy some peace and quiet. We were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the place. Sunrises and sunsets are something to behold!
