29 really spread out dispersed camping spots along a very long road. Some of them are hard to find. A few really awesome hiking trails a couple different lakes to choose from for fishing kayaking. It’s along rd 151 you also have Peterson lake nearby as well. I found two group campgrounds that are pay per night (22 a night) they have toilets and water. The dispersed by Peterson lake was very rough road high clearance recommended. The 151 to long draw relatively smooth and vehicle could make it
A nice lake and lots of private was a beautiful location though I happened across an area with lots of private land making it a challenge to explore for me no cell service. Very quiet from planes and light or any other noise pollution caught some epic views of does bucks a moose and a family of black bears bring bug juice the deer flys and mosquitos mean business.
Red feather is a very chill little town they offer free spring water(but be kind and donate a couple bucks) they got an ace hardware liquor store pot belly, ice cream store convienance stores all within 15-30 minutes depending on where you setup camp. Just north of the town the road turns dirt and when I say that there is easily over 80 campsites I mean it lots of trails to walk or have fun with toys decent trout fishing at one of the three small ponds nearby residents do reside around this area so respect there property and they will respect your camping nuff said I’ve camped here easily a dozen times in new spots and keep finding cool stuff to explore great place for large and small groups and family’s. Cell service is spotty with Verizon,t mobile and metro fall camping when the colors change is beautiful but gets chilly at night overall a decent spot. The cons like most popular places are litter bugs and campers not extinguishing fires all to 100% cold please check it before you leave.
Road stretches for quite a ways into the national forest with lots of pull off camping spots many that are hidden Forrest gems as well. It makes you feel as if the camping area is very remote and far from people. I have camped a couple spots along this road both with creepy vibes at nighttime especially late at night when the wildlife is much more active. Overall hiking to the peaks of mountains to get the views is great and stargazing at 2am is absolutely stunning.
I have camped here multiple times in different spots and explored most of the gulch and old mining locations. It’s great to bring the kids and explore creating a story core memory for them. It is possible to get even lower clearance vehicles in just take it slow. There is a crick the flows through the gulch with tons of beautiful hillsides with abandoned, game made, and forest path through. It was apart of the abandoned oxbow mine. The hiking trail through the gulch does lead back up to the road and is about a 7mile hike that gets very arduous the last 2 miles but worth it. In total if you can find them there is 22 closed mining shafts from years ago. Lots of tree coverage and very cute camping. The downside is some campers that have rolled through are party animals or like to bring atv’s or dirt bikes which is dumb there is not much room for them to play here. Also the party animals seem to need an education lesson on leave no trace. But aside from them it’s a good family spot to take the kids or get away on a budget not many bugs low light and noise pollution overall.
Great camping about 31 dispersed spots most with tables and a fire ring decent trout fishing a great kayaking feels remote without being so remote. Would recommend higher clearance and confident driving skills to get further towards the peninsula would not bring camper past site 10 gets a bit more sketchy driving. No Verizon service very spotty T-Mobile rangers are pretty chill.
