Easy car camping, quality of sites varies

Spring Cove is generally a nicely maintained campground, but the quality of the individual sites really varies. Some of them are secluded and separated from others by distance and foliage (including a few with lake views!) and others are right up on each other with very few trees and zero privacy from the sites on either side. We tried to choose carefully by looking at the campground map and some other pics online, but our original site was a real bummer, bare and close to neighbors. Luckily, the campground wasn't that crowded, so we asked to switch our reservation to a more private one we spotted, and they let us without any issues.

Check-In: You are supposed to check in at a different location about ~4mi from the campground, at the other end of the lake. They were very pleasant there, but we were surprised that we had to go so far to get our tag for the site. There are hosts at the campground but it seems like they don't do check in, only walkthroughs to see if you've checked in properly at the recreation facility.

Noise: The campground wasn't particularly quiet the night we stayed (Friday night of Memorial Day weekend), but we sort of expected that. It wasn't overly loud and people weren't up super late, but there were large families with kids and groups of younger folks, so you could hear talking and yelling and playing throughout the evening and into the night. Several cars got to the campground just after dark as well, which makes sense for folks leaving from the Bay Area after work.

Birds: So many of them! This was my favorite part.

Bathrooms: Super clean and functional, not smelly. No showers, yes flush toilets and running water. Plenty of facilities dotted throughout the campground.

Water: The water coming out of the spigots near the restrooms was not good even after running it through a filter. Strong metallic aftertaste.

Wood: You can gather downed wood, and there's plenty of it. The wood we bought from the campground hosts for $8 was totally wet and unburnable, so you might as well just gather.

Hiking: There were a few shorter trails near-ish the campground and we had a lovely hike on one of them. (The trailhead is about 2mi from the campground though, so we drove and parked there.) The area is beautiful and wildflowers were out in full glory. The lake is also really pretty, and you can easily walk along the road to any of the day use areas or picnic spots. The longer hikes on established trails seem to all be a little longer of a drive from the campground, and we were told we'd have to pay for parking at each of them as they are all separate day use sites.

Food/supplies: There's a little shop called Miller's Landing in walking distance from the campground, and they run a diner type restaurant and camp store. The food was great and they had all kinds of odds and ends if you happen to forget anything. Also, free wifi if you need it!

All in all: Spring Cove isn't a super special campground, but it's well-maintained, good for car camping, clean, in a beautiful area, and with easy amenities nearby. We're glad we stayed and we'd go back for a night on our way to some of the other destinations in the area. If you're into water activities, it seems like it'd be a great place to stay near the lake -- you can rent boats nearby, too.
