I hiked about 7.5 miles in from the Valentine Lake trailhead to a large clearing by the bridge with a nice cool stream. There are other clearings nearby which would be great for a small group camp. The trail itself is great and pretty well maintained. Be prepared for plenty of ups and downs and some rough terrain. There are adequate running streams to get water for filtering. From camp I went another 1.5 miles to the Evangeline primitive area parking lot (where there is a pit toilet), some beautiful views along that stretch. I would definitely do it again, but with a lighter pack and not in 90 degree weather!

Went here for my first ever solo camping trip, and I couldn't have chosen a better time or place. It was early November, and aside from a couple of hunters and afternoon fishers, the entire place was mine for 3 days. Aside from the aforementioned gunfire from a nearby shooting range, I had a wonderfully peaceful time here. It's a pretty small campground, but is not lacking in anything if all you need to do is get out there for a while.

Spent a wonderful few days here with the wife and kids (which are canine, btw). Well kept grounds, superb staff and a lot to do in the great outdoors. Several campsites on the lakefront with great views. And there's an island full of armadillos.

Went for a few nights solo camping (with my dog) in late January, so we had the tent area to ourselves until Friday afternoon. Really impressed with the cleanliness of the grounds, but some of the fire pits and grills could use some work. Great variety of campsite layouts, as well as a couple of wheelchair friendly ones. Facilities were clean and plentiful. Several miles of trails showcasing the beauty of southern Louisiana. Will definitely be going back.
