We stayed at Blackwoods for 5 days and 4 nights from Sept 28-Oct 2nd. It was our first time in Acadia and this was a fantastic campsite. The reason I give this 4/5 is the campsites are very close to rach other, overall I think we may have had the best site in the whole of Blackwoods, we were on the bend of the outer most loop that is not on the bigger loop road and so there was less thru traffic. Also we were away from RBs ehoch was nice. Overall this was a great spot—about a 3-5 min walk from a stellar overview of the ocean and just a 5 min drive from showers/firewood. We also were ablecto leave blackwoods and hike directly to some trails.
Great weather, easy drive in spot to camp at nt night. We arrived about midnight, paid via maildrop and were able to easily setup camp that evening. Best place to camp in the park with your dog if you plan on hiking up Tuckerman's ravine the next day.
My fiance and I hiked in late at about 9p in total darkness. It was about 1/2 a mile up to the split and then another 1/2 mile down to the shelter. Signage was good and easy to notice even at night. We arrived at the shelter and there were some campers we greeted and then we pitched a tent nearby (vincinity camping allowed). We fell asleep to the gentle sounds of the stream and woke up around daybreak surrounded by a loght mist and beautiful early fall foliage. Highly recommend this site, wish we had stayed longer!
