Came in for a mountain bike race, stayed at the campground. Nice large level lots to choose from. Very quiet and easy access to the trails, also a nice park to run in as well as bike.
Didn't explore much of the campground here, seemed huge with lots of sites, we basically had a whole area of sites to ourselves, and it was a very wooded area. Some lots were large, some were not. Very nice if you are looking for a no frills, quiet place to stay. We came here for a mountain bike race and enjoyed riding the trails!
We staying in Whispering Pines campground which was actually a few miles how the road from the heart of the park. Nice large level stone lots, nice bathrooms and private showers, very clean. We did a decent amount of biking here, the main road is nice for road biking, we rode out about 15 miles and back, saw a black bear. Beautiful country roads. And the trails are great for mountain biking. Bring your legs, lots of climbing!
We first drove down to River Run, but was not campground with hookups so we drove back through the park to get to Cokely, (know which one you are trying to get to!) The camps hosts were very nice and accomodating. They gave us restaurant recommendations and also allowed us to stay a few hours over, to keep the camper parked and clean up later, since we were there for a mountain bike race. Also the trails are alot of fun for mountain biking and the Ranger in the park is also an avid mountain biker and sat down with us and mapped out the race route so we could pre-ride the course a few days before it was marked. We can't wait to get back and ride! The campground itself had nice large lots, very open though. The hosts did recommend the spot we took because it had evening shade. And a decent bathhouse. Nothing fancy, but it was clean.
This was a convienent campground right off the highway, easy to get to, small but has a few full hookup sites. The site we stayed at had a small babbling brook right behind it and also a trail head that climbed up and back down right into the campground. Very nice trail for the dogs and I to get some exercise on. There are also more trails on the other side of the road and a waterfall fairly close by!
Stayed here for a week last spring, such a great campground, nice semi private sites, shaded. Beautiful area. Love that you can hike and bike right from the campground. The trails in Bent Creek Experimental forest are very nice and very well maintained! As we were leaving last year I was already booking again for a return trip. This has been our favorite campground we've come across and will definitely return! Also super close to the Blue Ridge Parkway for some scenic drives!
