Quiet and wooded

Sites are all wooded. We stayed in Chippewa Loop. No water hookup at the sites, you have to fill up at the various spigots around the park. Showers are hot, but the shower rooms and bathrooms are old and worn out. Relatively clean, just..well…OLD.

Nice KOA, good location

Your typical KOA. Clean facilities and lots of activities. Their pool is being worked on currently. They offered free mini golf because of that. Sites can be a bit cramped, but scenery is nice and bathrooms/ showers are clean.

One of the nicest KOA’s

We have stayed at. Peaceful at night, nice pines surrounding sites, friendly and attentive staff, and a ton of activities. Pool, hot tub, nice lake for fishing and boating, laundry facilities that take cards, and everything else that KOAs offer.

Clean and peaceful

Nice campground, clean and spaced out sites. Peaceful! No hookups. Water is not at each site, it’s at the bathrooms. They have a threaded spigot. You can fill tanks at the dump station. No showers. Bathrooms are clean. Close to some nice hikes.

Beautiful park in the middle of town

Although we don’t normally camp within city centers, this place was a pleasant surprise. Large and sprawling, there are large grassy areas and walking/biking trails all over the campground and area. Bathrooms are clean. Showers require tokens; $1=2 tokens=6 minutes. Not a fan of pay showers inside a pay campground. But, they only have two per bathroom, so it keeps some people who take hour long showers (oh, I’ve seen them, no joke!) from hogging the stalls. Sites are concrete with tent pads, and some are nicely shaded. Host and staff are friendly, too. Someone was in our non-electric spot when we arrived. The host put us at a full hookup spot for no extra charge because the guy pulled into the wrong spot. Our gain!

Nice state park

Paved pads, nice amenities and hiking nearby. Bathrooms are a bit scant and could use some work. Showers are hot, push button operated (I hate this). Close to a small town for supplies. Sites are a bit cramped and it was extremely busy for a Sunday check-in (no holiday). Sites were clean. Inconsiderate nasty campers though. Poop-stained underwear left sitting on a shower seat, feces smeared on the women’s restroom toilet seat. Are people really this disgusting? Please, people. Keep the poop in the bowl, and clean up after your filth so no one else has to deal with it. Fire rings and picnic tables at each site.

Beautiful campground, but…

You can’t beat the location, privacy, and beautiful surroundings at this campground. But, that’s where it falls waaaay short. First off, the bathrooms were all closed-I saw other people posting about this months ago, and thought it’d be fixed when we arrived. Nope. In fact, a sign at the entrance kiosk said the repairs should be done by April 2022. Guess not. In their place, they put port a potties. Great idea , but no one empties them. Inconsiderate campers have dumped trash into some of them. The crap literally is piled so high it reaches your arse in some of them. Disgusting thought. There is no water to the sites, no showers, and no dump. I didn’t even see any trash cans or bins. Not a good idea in bear country. If this campground can add some trash cans, fix the toilets, it’d be a solid 5 here. I don’t care about showers or water at the sites, so that wasn’t an issue. It’s a shame- they would have a lot more business if they added the aforementioned.

Great place, clean and friendly

Conveniently close to a lot of the Norte’s attractions. Clean restrooms, HOT showers! Laundry facilities and nice clean and grassy sites. Friendly and helpful staff, well appointed store.

Beautiful park

We loved our stay here. Stayed at the end of May 2022. Sites are large and spaced out. Big trees everywhere. Restrooms are clean, but don’t have anything to dry your hands with. Also no showers here. But everything is so nice it makes it a non-issue. Lake is amazing. Nice 10 mile paved trail for biking and walking.

One of the best for a KOA

I normally don’t stay in improved campgrounds like KOA, but passing through Alamogordo I wanted a stop where we could be in town with internet access and get some maintenance done. The location is perfect, right in town. The park itself is quiet, but there is some train noise and traffic noise from the surrounding area as expected. The grounds are clean and well kept, the bathroom and showers are clean, and the laundry is a nice addition. Staff is impeccably friendly and helpful. Wonderful place; would stay here again.

Beautiful silence

Want to get away from it all? Make sure you have a rig that can handle rough dirt and rocky roads, make sure your camper can do the same, or bring a tent, and you’re good to go. The campsites are so spread out, you can run a generator all night if you wanted to, and not a soul except the coyotes would hear it. It’s peaceful, dusty, and beautiful all at the same time. Not many hiking trails, but the ones there are awesome. The river and Finegan Springs are AMAZING. The restrooms are the cleanest around, the showers are hot, but they are a LONG drive from the sites and on pretty rocky roads. Not easy. The sites are fantastic. We stayed in site 6, which has a beautiful canyon view. We loved the peace and quiet and the sunsets. No cell service AT ALL. Wi-Fi is spotty at the restrooms/ campground entrance, but you won’t get it at the sites. Make sure you have the water you need for the weekend and a porta potty. Limited availability so book early. That’s what makes this park an awesome experience.

Great park, awesome petroglyphs

This park is right along the border, but don’t let that deter you. It’s as safe as can be, as the river in this area ledges up anyone intending on crossing over illegally. The rangers offer a tour of the petroglyphs, some of the oldest in North America, and it is done very well. Visitor center has an amazing museum inside. Campsites are pretty exposed, but spacious. There is zero cell service there, but spotty Wi-Fi from the restrooms. The trails are well marked and offer amazing vistas. Fun mountain biking too. Lots to do.

Needs some maintenance

The scenery is very nice at this campground, but they need to work on a few things before this place gets a big thumbs up. First off, the hot water heater tank broke the day after we arrived, and we had no hot shower in the B loop at all. Had to drive to the A loop to get a hot shower, but the tank there is so small, two people can barely get a decent shower before the water cools off. Not good. The trails in the park are still damaged from storms, and there seems to be no urgency to get them fixed. There is ZERO internet at the campground and no Wi-Fi either. You are about 15-20 minutes away from town. So be prepared to be bored out of your mind at this campground. We left early after going a bit stir crazy. Great place for a one nighter or if you just want to get away for a couple days.

Beautiful campground, but overpriced

We stayed here for a few days in late January. The campground is new, everything is in pristine shape, the sites are huge, and they keep it nice and clean. The lake is pretty decent, there are a few small trails around the area, and you are close to a small town. Biggest issue? 30 bucks a night, plus 5 dollars per person for a day use fee. That works out to 40 bucks a day for two people. Steep. Why on earth they have campers paying the daily use fee is ridiculous. That should be included in the campground cost! I guess they are trying to recoup the cost for all their modifications. Other problem are the luke warm showers and horrible shower heads. It’s like taking a shower under a pressure washer with a button you have to press every minute. Please provide NORMAL showers for your campers! Other than those two gripes, this place is really nice and clean.

Nice campground with lots of activities

Nice hiking trails, mountain biking trails, a lake, a waterfall, and cabins. What more could you ask for all in one spot? Campground is a bit cramped, but the showers and bathrooms are clean, and the trails are well maintained. Close to shopping. Very quiet at night.

Nice and quiet during winter

We stayed here in early December 2021. Sites are empty and the park itself is quiet. Hosts are very nice. Road noise is a problem if you’re in a tent, but not an issue so much after 10pm. Bath facilities are clean, and the showers are hot. Firewood is available in the office. Close to Brevard for shopping and close to hiking in Pisgah and DuPont.

USFS needs to step it up

We came here in mid November 2021 and stayed for a week. I was disappointed with the campground. The bathrooms were clean, but are in bad need of updates, as are the shower facilities. Showers were luke warm, some had non-functioning heaters in them, and a lot of rust and broken shelving. The sites are level, but are not picked up routinely; we had to clean our site of discarded bottle caps, hygiene items, etc. when we arrived. The laundry facilities are outside- and some machines didn’t work. At one point (probably due to seasonal reasons) they removed all the washing machines. No notice posted. The views are nice, but the lake/river effect wind coming in during winter is punishing and forces you inside most of the time anyway. Trails on the property are overgrown, and the one loop by the ranger station has two bridges that look like they have been destroyed for years- no one is doing any maintenance on them. I expected to do some route finding due to fall, but this was really bad. The surrounding area makes up for it, nice things to see, lots of history, nice trails and mountain bike spots. But you have to drive about 40 minutes minimum from the campground to get to the MTB trails, and about the same to get to a town (Murray, Ky) that has everything. The USFS runs this place, and they seemed helpful, but they need to step it up in the maintenance department here. The playground for kids is missing swings, the trash in some receptacles is full. Furthermore; they have some long-term residents that have sites that look like they are running a swap meet out of them. I don’t think that should be allowed in a park like this.

Amazing place

This was an amazing campground. Large sites, spread out, and the silence- oh my God. Was it relaxing. Lots to do. No cell service. They have Wi-Fi at the camp office if you really need it. We took a pontoon boat tour of the Okefenokee. John, our guide, truly loves where he works and it showed. The store has the basics. Make sure you stock up before getting here, it’s a long way back to town. The night skies did not disappoint.

Great campground for younger campers

We have always liked “quieter” campgrounds with less crowds, more open spaces, and larger sites. That being said, this park has some nice hiking trails, equestrian trails, a really interesting and enjoyable farm with animals, and a lot of stuff to do. The store has the basics, like firewood and ice and some odds and ends. We stayed in the equestrian campground, which consists of four sites. They are very close together. They also only have pit toilets and no shower facilities. We had to buy a shower pass in order to use the shower facilities in the main campgrounds. The campgrounds there have no privacy; they are jam packed together, but great if you are a social camper. Very little foliage in those areas leaves you zero privacy. It’s very noisy also. Facilities were relatively clean. Campsite loop one is older, campsite two is newer. If you want some peace and quiet, and don’t mind the lack of showers, the equestrian sites are the way to go. If you’re a social camper, go with loop two. Loop one just looks a bit tired and in need of updating.

Very relaxing and quiet. Clean facilities.

We stayed here for 4 nights in late April 2021. The weather was cool, and beautiful. We stayed in campsite 17, and had a small teardrop trailer. The site is a bit cramped with a trailer and a vehicle parked in it, and we had no room to open our awning. There are other sites in the same loop that appeared to have a much larger footprint where you would have more space. The drop-down picnic area and fire pit are a nice touch. The sites are spread out and offer a good amount of privacy. Woods keep the sun off you during the day. The toilet facilities and shower facilities were kept clean. We used the laundry facility as well; very clean. The "outpost" store has very little in the way of product, so make sure you have your own supplies. This isn't a typical camp store that sells charcoal, sundries, etc. Their firewood was a bit wet and we had a hard time lighting it, so I'd suggest making sure you bring your own dry wood. The grounds are well kept and very pleasant. Some nice hiking trails within the park itself. We can't wait to come out here again. Loved it.
