This place is gorgeous, clean, friendly, and serene. We stayed a total of 5 nights and enjoyed it very much. The sites are nice, long pull-thrus with full hookups. There are cabins, an inn, and tent sites as well. The laundry facilities, bathrooms, and showers are all extremely clean and EVERYTHING WORKS!
One of my favorite parts of this campground was the location. You get a great view of the black hills, wide open sky for start gazing, and it’s close to Custer state park and Custer itself. Only an hour from Rapid City. While having the feeling of being completely away from everything you have everything you could need 4 miles away.
Our kids looooved it here. There’s a great play ground and plenty of room to run around. We don’t have horses but seeing them come in and out of camp was a lot of fun.
This campground had amazing staff, was clean, and had great amenities. The sites are very small however, and to do anything besides swim and play on the playground you need to drive. It’s a great place to stay when visiting family! We will definitely stay again.
The spots for RVs are HUGE. The roads and nice and wide and the views are beautiful. The weather was not nice to us during our stay, but we still got to get out on the lake and canoe (Kickapoo adventures). We also took a short hike when it wasn’t raining and really enjoyed it. This park has a lot more to offer than what we were able to do. I saw playgrounds, corn hole, fishing spots galore, bike trails, etc. I didn’t see anywhere to swim, which was disappointing. Overall though it was a great visit. We’ll definitely be back!
The roads and spots are tight, so as relatively new users to our travel trailer parking was tricky. Electric only at the sites, fire pits and picnic tables as usual. There are trees at most of the sites so shade is decent. The whole place really filled up Friday night. Like not one empty site in sight.
The lakes are nice, my 7 year old caught a 14” bass! The kids loved the swimming area.
The trails along the Platt are decent. They’re unmarked and a little rough, but our family (and dogs enjoyed them!) the primitive camping area must have flooded recently, because it was closed when we walked the trails there.
Overall the campground could have been cleaner, but was by no means uncomfortably dirty. Lots of bugs in the bathrooms etc. but it’s camping, so…
The trains are loud when they blow their horns, but maybe since we’re from the Chicago area it didn’t bother us.
There’s not a ton nearby. The closest Walmart is about 20 mins away. But there is a decent pizza place nearby.
**special note! You will need a permit for your vehicle to enter, a permit to fish, and a permit for each additional vehicle per day. On top of the reservation fee. We are out of state and stayed long enough to justify an annual pass. We only had the one car.
It’s relatively easy to get to as it is close to the interstate. The site for our 30 ft travel trailer was very roomy. (We’re very new to camping with a trailer and we backed it in on the first try) We came here with a friend and booked sites next to each other. There are trees in between! With small paths! My kids loved that part. The fire wood sold at the camp store was very green and had a hard time catching. Electric hookups only. No water except at taps around the grounds. There IS a dump station contrary to what the official site says. All in all, we had a good time. Plenty of hiking, biking, and a swimming area.
