I camped at one of the remote camp spots and a few friends camped at the cart in spots so I got to experience both areas. I personally enjoyed the remote camp spots more because it felt more like real camping. Though, the cart in spots had enough space to separate you from your neighbors.
I did enjoy the cart in spot because it was a short walk to my car that I had my kayak on. Lake Itasca and the surrounding smaller lakes (remote in spot) were beautiful and a perfect getaway. I look forward to camping here again in the future!
BP7 on Myrtle Lake was the perfect remote spot for me since it wasn't too far of a hike to meet up with friends at their cart in spot.
Jay Cooke is a great place to drive to for a day hike of exploring and sitting nearby the rapids. This is a great spot for some light rapids kayaking! You can beach your kayak after the busy section and just sit and enjoy the water and go for a hike. This place gets pretty busy in the summer so I'd suggest going in the early morning to avoid most people and get the most out of your time there!
Additionally, the roads nearby and going through the park are really windy and pretty fun to drive on. You can drive right along the water for a good stretch of road which makes the trip all that much better!
Tettegouche is such a big park that there's SO many different things to review. Palisade Head is a popular destination in this park and is awesome to see for sunrise or sunset. Note that the drive up to Palisade Head is curvy and long so I wouldn't suggest walking-drive instead, and slowly since there's typically other cars using the same road.
Bean and Bear Lake is my favorite hike in Tettegouche. It's about a 7 mile (round trip) hike and you can camp right at Bear Lake. This is a beautiful place to visit in the Fall! I'm always surprised with Tettegouche of, first, how large the park is. Second, since the park is so large and there's so much to see it's surprising quiet even during peak months. There's a great mix of forest, clear paths, waterfalls, and Lake Superior shore line.
Great place to space and explore!
Split Rock Lighthouse is one of my favorite trips when visiting Duluth. Waking up to seeing Lake Superior is just as amazing as the hiking trails nearby. This campsite is a great balance between nature and still being close to civilization. I would recommend this spot for a quick hike or a few nights stay. There's plenty to do and see in this area that you truly can't spend enough time here.
This was a beautiful camping spot with close water access. There was plenty of area nearby to hike or go swimming and there was a cool water run off that you can walk down the side of. There was plenty of wild life nearby and the camping spot was very clean!
The campground I stayed at was clean and it was awesome waking up with the sound of rushing water. I loved hiking around the falls and being able to swim all day as well. Though, with all this water the bugs were thick and there wasn't enough deet to keep them away. Pretty area to hike through but I don't think I'll be staying the night again due to the bugs.
This is one of my all time favorite hikes and camp spots "up north". The hike into the Bean and Bear Lakes is fun and has some great views in itself. Though the best and most gratifying part of the hike is getting to the top of the overlook and seeing both lakes. Since you definitely have to HIKE IN to this camp spot I wouldn't suggest it to beginner campers
This was a good first camping trip site as it's not too far from the city but still makes you feel like you're in the heart of nature. The campground is pretty small for campers with tents but there were some decent hiking spots nearby!
I camped here last summer and wasn't impressed at how close the camp sites were. We camped in a tent and there were several RV's nearby. Additionally when we went to hike around the area we couldn't seem to escape the sounds of the nearby highway. Aside from that the bluffs were beautiful and really fun to climb!
Beautiful camp site where you forget the high way is nearby. The small town this site is located in was cute as well as they show off their Scandinavian heritage. Would highly recommend checking out the New Glarus brewery as well as it's one of the cleanest, and most impressive breweries I've been to yet. The amount of copper in the brewery was truly breath taking.
