The park ranger at Mount Mitchell told us about Black Mountain Campground and it was worth the search. It is off the beaten path but is an amazing place to stay and hike. The restrooms are very clean and were new when we were there in 2015. Each campsite has plenty of room to spread out and amazing views of the mountains. There is a small river running through the campground that will lull you to sleep after a long day. There is a huge playground and ball field at the campground.
My wife and I wanted to camp close K-West Camp/Kanakuk and this was across the cove. The campground has nice clean restrooms and showers. The campground host were some of the nicest people you would like to meet. The campground is close to Dogwood Canyon, a great blueberry farm and the famous Branson strip. There is a marina right by the campground and easy access to Table Rock Lake. This is a great place to spend some time and slow down and enjoy all of the surrounding attractions.
When camping in Kansas you must try the Rocky Ford Campground in Tuttle State Park River Pond Area. This is a great shaded area with water views and full hookups. There are great secluded sites or sites you can camp next to friends or family. There are huge cottonwood trees that are wrapped with green vines during the summer months that guide you through the park. Make sure and put your food away at night or the raccoons will be dining at your table during the night. Site #44 is our favorite spot to hang the hammock and relax after biking or hiking the trails.
