Great spot!

We stayed here on an off week. Almost had the place to ourselves except for the full timers. The amenities were not open…off season and/or COVID…but we went and took a look and got a thumbs up by our 7 year old daughter. The place looks great for a summer stay!

We used the spot to not be in the snow but make the trip up to Iron Mountain Sno-Park…a 45 minute drive. The snow looked great for skiing but not so much for snowmen or sledding. Wish we had snow shoes!

The next day it was rainy so we drove an hour to Sacramento to visit the zoo and old town. On the way back we stopped at Sutter Creek (an old mining town) and had locally made ice cream in Pine Grove. If you are looking for hipster coffee — Sutter Creek is the way to go!

On our last day we checked out and drove the trailer over to the Indian Grinding Rock State Park. Very few in the parking lot which allowed us to take up a bunch of spots…otherwise there would t have been parking for us. We did the southern trail nature hike and saw the grinding rocks. It’s a must see in our opinion.

On our way out we stopped at the local taco truck…advice from a local. They serve breakfast burritos all day. Get the chorizo. It is the most legit breakfast burrito you’ll ever get!

Bottom line — it’s a great spot to get around the area. We want to come back in the warmer months. Only issue was the internet was not working…and our T-Mobile phones didn’t have coverage in the area. That’s on us though. If you want cell service and reliable internet I don’t think you can hold the campground liable for that!

A fun Oasis

A great spot that we can’t wait to go back and spend a couple of days at. The amenities at this KOA are great. Pool…playground…horseshoes…archery range…etc.

Just up the road too is the Calico western ghost town.

They have some decent shaded areas that made it look like just about every spot would be a good one.

We had a spot in the front with a patio and everything. It was very nice except for the sewer drain being at the front end of the site (I had to put an extension on my poop pipe)…the other down side of being in the front is the traffic noise from the highway…I could hear it all night.

Last bit — the staff is very responsive and helpful. The sewage pipe had a back up in it (thankfully learned this with grey water!). The staff got out there and foxed it right away. The only other weird thing was my 30AMP power surge protector said polarity was reversed on the L1 or L2…but everything worked fine.

Great community

Huge and fun camp! We were there for three nights to visit Sedona. They have a good pool (Fri & Sat you have to reserve a one hour time slot). There are a lot of permanent and full time campers there…all of them are really nice…always waving and generally smiling.

They have a lot of amenities that you could just spend a day staying at the resort and never get board …hiking, river access, pool, min golf, etc.

We stayed in the A section. We had a nice spot and an easy walk to the pool. Next time we want to check out the H section as they seem to have more trees and less light at night.

Next tome we will do our best to get there as early as possible (noon is the earliest to check in)…as the spots are first come/first serve. At registration they will give you a map and highlight which spots are open. It can be tough to decide which section to focus on and which spot to pick but overall there will likely be a decent flat spot that you’ll have.

As far as COVID…this is a great place. All staff wore masks. They had precautions in place…and people would also keep their social distance. Outside of the camp…Cottonwood had some areas where people would not wear masks (ie walmart) and there was a major fall festival in Prescott that we drove by that was jam packed with people not wearing masks. Sedona, on the other hand, was pretty good about safety precautions and measures.

Last note — the other reviews are right about the traffic circles leading up to the resort and the very low and heavily enforced speed limits on the resort itself. While it took about 15-20 minutes to get out of the resort and on the road to Sedona…neither the speed limit or the oddity of the traffic circles had any negative impacts on our vacation.

Beach & Water & Sand

The RV spots are full hook up and on dirt / sand….and right next to the water. You typically share a beach with three other RV sites though we had the beach mostly to ourselves during our stay. My six year old daughter (still learning to swim) was able to enjoy the water as it didn’t get deep until you were about 10 feet from the bank.

Downside is that you have to watch out for fire ants (red ants). Not sure if it’s true for all sites but was definitely true for the RV sites at site 10. Also, if you don’t get an A slot (we were in slot 10C) you will have to look at your neighbor’s poop pipe when hanging outside you trailer. Last, it’s all sand. And that sand is going to get everywhere.

Next time we go, we will definitely go for an A slot and bring a large outdoor area rug. We will also bring a canopy or tent so we can have some shade while hanging out on the beach. Last, we’ll bring more stuff to do out in the water.

As far as COVID goes, this is a great getaway if you pack right for it and are looking to just hang out on your own beach (or if you hav’em or are rich enough…bring/rent an OTV or boat) and just hang out in/around your camper.
