Fabulous Winter Camping

This location will not disappoint! I had the place to myself in Feb 2021. The pit toilet was open, I stopped in and it was spotless.

You need to be 100% self contained. There are several beautiful campsites, many overlooking the River. The road approaching seems to be well kept. It was snow packed when I visited, but easily passable. I did use my 4 wheel drive, just be safe. Each campsite has a fire pit and table.

I’ll be excited to come back during white water rafting season, it’s a great place to launch your boat.

Beautiful views and flat campsites.

I am not a fan of campsites …. would prefer wild camping and boondocking.  We decided to stay at Saddlehorn for a night and we were very impressed.  The sites are close to each other, however, there is enough natural landscape and trees to allow for privacy.  Each site had a place for 1 car to park, a picnic table and a grill for charcoal.  No fire rings.  The views are spectacular and we did a few hikes that were breathtaking.

The bathrooms are very clean and although we didn't need ADA accommodations, I was very happy to see a couple of sites dedicated to those who may need it.

Loved this place enough to want to come back!  If you don't need RV hook up, its first come first serve.  We arrived on a Thursday, early afternoon and there were only a few sites to choose from, so plan accordingly!

Enjoy!

Fabulous - lots of space, quiet and solitude.

We wanted to be close to Bryce Canyon but not in all of the hub and chaos of people. This location is about a 10 minute drive away from Bryce.  This is the perfect location to get away from it all.  When you first arrive, you will see plenty of spots for RV's and travel trailers.  We traveled 1.8 miles and took a left turn on a small dirt road and found 5 or 6 campsites that were level and far away from each other. (We were the only one down this road).

The site was level with a lot of space to spread out.  There was a firepit but no other facilities, so come prepared with everything you need. Due to fire restrictions, we didn't have a fire, and enjoyed seeing the Milky Way and shooting stars!  There is a pit toilet across the highway before you turn into the BLM land.

We thought we would only stay for one night, but ended up there 2 nights since it was so beautiful!

Beautiful views AND very over crowded.

Our intention was to stay at Hunter Canyon Campground and found it full on a Thursday morning.  If you travel further on the dirt road, you will find 4 additional campgrounds, Ledge A-D.  We arrived at 10:30am and there was only three sites available at Ledge B (Ledge A was closed for renovation).  We quickly made camp and continued to find people circling all day and night hoping to find a place to camp.

Ledge B had pit toilets and a very large dumpster for trash. We travel in a class B campervan and never needed to use the toilets.  The dumpster was overflowing and appeared not to have been emptied all summer. By the end of our time there (3 nights), people were leaving trash next to the dumpster.  The area was extremely overcrowded , some campsites had 7-8 cars in it.  It was a party atmosphere and very noisy on the first night, but the 2nd night, things had calmed down significantly. I think COVID had more people out than usual during October.  I would not consider this location as a good spot for families.

The saving grace for this place is the natural beauty.  Every single place you look is gorgeous cliffs and canyons, they almost didn't look real.  The drive to the campground is on dirt roads with some steep drop offs with cliffs.  There are 2 hairpin turns that appear worse than they are, since they paved that portion of the road.  The campsite had a fire pit and a table and was very level.  No cell service, it is about 8 miles to Moab and takes about 30 minutes to get there.

Bottom line, loved the views and location, didn't love the crowd.

Spectacular - 4x4 is required to access.

We drove our BRAND NEW 4x4 Revel and were nervous the entire trip up and back.  We are a high profile vehicle, luckily we had plenty of clearance but it was very nerve wracking both up and back.  It is about 7 miles of dirt road, and 4 miles of very challenging (for me) driving.

Be sure to follow the sign LEFT to Chinns Lake.  When you arrive, there are several dispersed campsites around the lake.  All the spots have beautiful views and tons of space between other campers.  There are firepits (even though CO is on a fire ban) that  will be nice for future visits.  We visited on Sept 17-19, 2020, so the evenings are cold and the days short.  Additionally, the water level was very low.

The area is nice for hiking and exploring, and especially to get away from it all.  No cell phone service.

As the weekend approached, there were several ATV's heading up for the day.  While we were there, only 3 other groups camping on the weekend.

You will be at 11,000 feet looking at the Continental Divide!  THIS is Colorado camping!  Enjoy and please remember to leave no trace!

Maiden Voyage

Just bought our adventure van and decided to try it close to home so we could understand how everything worked. The campground is clean and quiet, I made a quick stop in the facilities and everything was well maintained. I didn’t love the campground feel … I felt like I was very close to other campers. Now that I know our camper van is in complete working order, we will be doing more dispersed camping - trying to get away from it all - isn’t that what camping is all about?
