Decent closest campground to the city

Took my sister and her bf on their first camping trip here. Our original plan was to come here and do a "vanlife" experience by sleeping in our car, but the attendant told us we can't do that and needed to be in tents. So we all got tents and went to the primitive sites. That wouldn't have been a problem, but the lady had an attitude and said, "I'm going to drive by and check up on you guys"…like we're doing something super illegal? If you want to sleep in your cars, according to her, you need a "commercial" license plate, for anyone who wants to do that!

Other than the check-in experience being rough, our campsite was spacious with a table and fire pit. The bathroom was nice and clean. There's a nice forest where we went for a night's walk!

First camping experience!

Great first camping experience! We got 2 sites and each site was very spacious, with tables and fire pits. It was extremely humid and hot when we went so make sure to bring bug spray! We were about a 5 min drive from Mammoth Cave so it was very convenient. There were clean shower and bathroom facilities but you had to pay to use the shower (back in 2015 at least). I found a faucet right next to the showers and I just bathed there in my bathing suit. Because it was so hot, we wanted to go swimming. The closest body of water we found was a river (definitely was not clean) and it helped cool us down, but we saw a water snake so we all jumped out (yup, we're city folks!). We found a little pond by a residents area so we paid a fishing fee and went fishing. Local small shops were very cool too!

Camping with my bf's family!

It was my first time camping with my bf's family and we had a blast! We booked several sites and the sites that we got had a good amount of trees caving in so it was nicely shaded. There was a nice dock for fishing and the bathrooms were clean. We found a cave as well so some of us went to explore it!

First time camping with my bf!

Love this campground! It was my first time going camping with just my boyfriend and his dog. Each campsite was very spacious and came with a table and fire pit. We had a site right next to a forest and we found a little river so we decided to go exploring a bit and had loads of fun! The bathroom and shower facilities were nice and clean. We heard coyotes at night (they were laughing, no joke) so that was a little scary! We went to Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Park for hikes and loved both!

Great 2nd camping experience!

I came here with my bf's mom's side of the family and had a great time! We booked two sites next to each other to accommodate a party of 6+. Lake Michigan's water was a lot cleaner than the water in Chicago so that was nice to see. There were nice, short trails. The beachfront was very nice. There was a small pond where we fished just for fun. Each campsite was very spacious with tables and fire pits.

Quiet and peaceful campsite!

Great campground! We camped at the Whitewater Lake Campground and it was well maintained. It was very quiet and peaceful. There were two areas we went swimming; one was a river where there were more boats and the other was more for recreational swimming. Bathroom and shower facilities were well maintained! Our campsite had a table and fire pit.

Great first camping experience with my friends!

Great campground! It was my first time camping with my friends and we all enjoyed our stay here. Campsites were spacious and well maintained. Came with a table and a fire pit. There were clean bathrooms with shower facilities. In comparison to Chicago's Lake Michigan, the water up here was a lot cleaner so we didn't feel gross after swimming. There was a nice lake and a dock for fishing, which we loved!

Great local campground!

100% recommend this place! We decided to go here because we wanted to go camping with a friend in IN and meet halfway. Our friend ended up not being able to meet us but we still went, and I'm glad we did! This campground was clean and spacious. The bathroom and shower facility was well maintained. There's a river that's a 5 min walk from the campground that we swam in and it kept us cool from the heat. Most importantly, Chris, the owner, was the highlight! From booking the reservation to the whole stay, she was friendly and welcoming. I would drive from the city just to spend the night to hang out with her because she was just that amazing! Thank you Chris for everything. We'll be back soon! :)
