Come prepared

Mt. Charleston overall is a nice play to visit for the day to get away from the Las Vegas heat. As far as dispersed camping, come supplied and be ready to be self-sufficient. There are no natural water sources for extra water, no cell service in most areas, and no services outside of the small town on the main road. I prefer Mt. Charleston more as a day trip than an overnight trip. The hiking is great, but there is not much else to do beyond hiking. It does get snow in the winter time, which is a plus. There is skiing and places to go sledding in the winter.

Lakeside Dispersed Camping

We have camped here several times in our trailer over the past few months. Lakeside dispersed camping is competitive, so get there early on a Friday if you plan to be there over a weekend. There are also designated campsites with tables, but they are quite a bit farther from the lake. Lakeside spots at the Upper Reservoir near the big rocks usually go first. The lower reservoir is quieter and lakeside spots are easier to obtain. The scenery at the lower reservoir is not as nice, though we’ve had better luck fishing at the lower reservoir. The lake does get pretty busy with a fair amount of ATV activity and kayakers, which we don’t mind, but it may be an important point for others. No shade trees. No cell service. Check the weather before you go - it can get very windy. A nice getaway in Southern Utah if you are self-contained as you can camp right on the lake.

Well Spaced Lakeside Camping

We spent two nights here in mid June 2020. The camp hosts were great - they provided maps, fishing tips, and directions to the site. Site 58 is a back-in site easy walking distance to the lake. The site was large enough to accommodate a 20ft Trailer and full size truck. If you are towing anything bigger than 22-25ft, you may want to consider a different site. The table and fire pit were on the drivers side, so we didn’t really use them. Overall, the sites were well spaced and well maintained. The Grand Canyon South Rim entrance is about 45 minutes drive away and the town of Willams is only a 5 minute drive away. Had moderate (2 bars) AT&T service. The lake is a reservoir so no swimming or SUPs allowed. Scenery is very nice. The area is surrounded by pine. Would stay here again.
