Beware the system

This campground is pretty nice but the walk in system is terrible. We wanted to stay for 3 nights but each they wouldn't allow us to simply pay for 3 nights. Instead each morning we had to drive to the rangers station and pay for the next night. The morning before the 3rd night we were informed someone had beat us to the campsite for that day and even though all of the other walk in sites were empty we had to move sites. We ended up leaving.

They are very strict at this campground so make sure you follow the rules exactly. I saw the rangers give 6 citations in the 2 days I was there.

It is beautiful though and the sites are large. Bathrooms are clean. Showers are 50 cents for 2 minutes but take most of that time to warm up.

Get there early

We have camped here many times. The spaces are small but there's a great playground with a large area to run around for the kids. If you're lucky enough to get one of the 8 or so sites along the field the kids can just run and play while we cook dinner, set up camp, etc. It's near the city but far enough out you would never know it when you are there.

It can be noisy at night with cars driving in and out. And despite going on a Tuesday the campground was filled by late afternoon.

Miserable

This was one of the most miserable campgrounds we have ever stayed at. Our spot was so awkward we had to find somebody to show us where it was! We had to walk down a little path a ways until it opened into an area that looked like it had been roughly cleared by a tractor. There were little biting gnats that there was no way to repel short of hiding in the tent. And it was so hot all night long none of us slept. We were so desperate to get out in the morning we skipped our planned breakfast and grabbed something at the store.

The view was beautiful though!

Beware road closures

Getting to the campground was not easy. We drove all of the way down to the lake only to discover the west rim road is closed at night. We had to find our way out and back around. The lake was beautiful in the moonlight though!

The showers and faucets have been capped off so bring extra water or fill up at the store.

Great!

This place is beautiful! Bathrooms and showers were close by. Showers are coin operated and dark though so bring quarters and a flashlight! My family greatly enjoyed hiking to participate in the eduquest. I highly recommend it if you have kids!
