Camping Gem

The campground itself does not have much to offer. It is small and quiet with a vault toilet. It is surrounded by burn scars so that is unfortunate but the scenery is still beautiful. We enjoy tent camping with minimal amenities and easy hiking trails for kids. The trail that starts in this campground and leads you to the waterfall is a pleasant surprise. It is completely unexpected, you feel like you're at a waterfall in Hawaii, it's a beautiful must-see. Most sites have little to no shade or privacy. We were there in April and it was too hot for our liking with no tress/no shade at our site. It is a small campground so even if full it wouldn't feel crowded. Most of the traffic is foot traffic from day hikers coming through to get to the waterfall.

Forest Mountain Camping

A great campground if you truly want to get away. This campground doesn't have much to offer in the sense of amenities but if you're looking for peace, quiet and few people then this is the spot. Higher elevation so cooler temps, beautiful views, spots spaced far apart and new vault toilets. We've been here twice, both times were over 4th of July weekends. It was nice to be away from crowds and full campgrounds during a popular holiday weekend. Temps were not too hot and not too cold. Camp host resides at another nearby campground but drives around Campo Alto every morning. They will charge you $10 for extra vehicles on site. We shared sites 9 an 10 with our friends. Those sites are perfect for friends and/or families to share. They are connected to each other and separated with a short driveway off the main campground road. Highly recommend if you enjoy serene and primitive camping.

Easy Beach Camping

We stayed in the upper primitive Washburn campground. It is small and sites don't offer much privacy (rv lights shining on our tent) so it wasn't our favorite type of camping experience. But the hike to the beach is  perfect and beautiful. We drove through the lower campground and it is much closer to the beach. Those sites offered much more privacy and there's lots to choose from as it's a much larger campground. We will likely go back to that campground. The vault toilets at Washburn were the nicest I've ever seen. Large, clean and modern (if a vault toilet could be modern!).

Cozy campground in the woods

Wheeler Gorge is the only campground we have been to more than once. There's so much to explore that we try a new campground every time we go camping. We have camped there 5 times now. The only downside is the road noise as it sits very close to the highway. It is not constant but the motorcycles on Sunday mornings are less than desirable when you're looking for a quiet getaway. We have camped here in October and the stream was still running. No water and the vault toilets are fine. Great campground for kids, we always have a good time.

Serene forest camping

This is a beautiful, relaxing and tranquil campground. Most sites were spread out enough for privacy. Camp neighbors were respectful. We were in site 30 which was incredibly spacious. There were a couple flat spots big enough for our large tent. The weather in middle of October was chilly but layers kept us warm. The wind however on our second night there was so crazy it scared our little one. It roared through the night and was relentlessly cold in the morning. The Exploration Trail was a bonus. Super easy 1/4 mile paved hike leading you through beautiful scenery. Would definitely come back.
