I love the outdoors: hiking, camping, kayaking, you name it. I also run a 4-H club and the outdoor adventure project where we tak kids outdoors.

Nice for a quick spring get away

My review for this site is going to be almost identical to my other reviews in the area. We've stayed in Angeles National Forest a few times and I would really recommend only camping in the Spring and early Summer. It gets extremely hot in August & September.

Pros:

  • The scenery is gorgeous. The tall pines we all love.
  • There is a ton of hiking near by and lots to do.
  • Dog friendly.
  • Quiet
  • Perfect temperatures in spring and early summer.
  • Water on site.
  • Abundant Wildlife coming through camp.

Cons:

  • Don't fish the local pond, Jackson Lake. It's full of litter & the fish looked unhealthy.
  • Right on the highway (but it's not highly traveled at night).
  • You do have to drive to hike.
  • Extremely hot in August & September.
  • Abundant Wildlife coming through camp. This has included bears sniffing out tent in the middle of the night & coyotes coming through… Personally I think it's awesome, but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.

If I'm going to choose between this grounds & others on this side of Angeles, I'd go with this one. There aren't as many sites and they're all rather large.

Nice Views

We've hiked here a few times and decided to camp one evening as it's only an hour and a half drive from our home. Personally I felt like this campground is meant for those that want to get outside for a weekend, not really camp.

Pros:

  • Views are gorgeous. It's very scenic, with large pines, small ponds, a stream.
  • Easy to Find the park & the campsite.
  • Facilities were clean and well maintained.

Cons:

  • Dogs aren't allowed on trails.
  • The campgrounds are fairly underwhelming. They are in the open and feel exposed.. and the trails are popular enough to increase that feeling.
  • The hiking trails are pretty but they don't take you very far. You never really get that feeling of being fully immersed in nature.
Hot Aug-Sept

We've stayed in Angeles National Forest a few times and I would really recommend staying out of the area during August and September; Spring is beautiful though.

Good Campsites

We've stayed at both family campgrounds in Cuyamaca. I prefer Paso Picacho over Green Valley but there are some advantages at Green Valley over Paso.

Pros:

  • Campsites are larger than at Paso Picacho and there aren't as many.
  • Campsites are easier to find.
  • Clean
  • More out of the way.
  • Lots of birds
  • Sites G027-9 were pretty secluded. G53-4 had lots of trees and good for a group together.

Cons:

  • You have to drive to get to trails.
  • Can still get pretty loud.
  • Not good for dogs as they are not allowed on trails, only roads and campgrounds.
Ok for groups

I was not a huge fan of this campground but I think for out of towners, or for a fun time with friends by a bonfire, it would be great. Campground is in town, right on a major road/hwy, crowded, and loud. The beach is very rocky and not the best place to swim but if you go further north or south there are sandy beaches.

If you have have small children or are looking to party the location being so close to stores and food would be nice. Also it's a beautiful location and staff are friendly. So while I didn't find it to be that great others may have a lovely time.

Good Local Camping

I took my 4-H club hiking and here in April 2017. We will definitely be back. We had a ton of fun and I've stayed at one of the other local campsites before.

Pros:

  • The campsites were well laid out
  • The scenery was beautiful
  • The staff was great and friendly.
  • The trails are easily accessible and fun. There's something for everyone.
  • Water & full bathrooms are always available. Restrooms are recently remodeled.

Cons:

  • Dont bring your dogs unless you plan on staying in camp. They aren't allowed on trails.
  • Campsites are close together and people aren't very respectful.
  • Finding your spot can be confusing. Signs can easily be missed and there aren't signs to every campground.
