Incredible campground, great mountain views

We car camped right down the road from the pull in spot marked on this map. It was a perfect, meadow opening with an existing fire pit. Easy get to the car level. The spot is just above the creek, it looked like a moose's dream spot but we didn't see any. There were trees and bushes along the creek, but no privacy from the dirt road. You'd be pretty exposed in a down pour. There is forrest just across the road though. While we were there for one night, we saw maybe 6 cars go by. The dirt road in from the east side is fine for SUVs, smaller cars might have some trouble. We drove west towards Leadville when we left and there was a ton of amazing camping spots along the road. One of the best places I've camped.

Did dispersed camping down the road

Didn't actually stay at the campground, there are a lot of dispersed campsite in between Fourmile and Horseshoe. All sit along the creek running through, so nice sound of water. That of course meant the site came with plenty of mosquitos, so bring spray! There weren't any amenities, but there was already made fire pits. The dirt road in is fine for SUVs, small cars could probably make it fine if taken carefully. We did see a young moose on the way in! Only camped one night and hiked up to Wheeler Lake the next morning.

Nice tucked away spot with a creek

Only one spot was suitable for a car camping, the rest were for tents. There is a big waterfall up at the top of the campground, short hike. Spot had a bench, 2 picnic tables and a firepit. The creek was rushing right below the site. 2 bathrooms and trash cans. Only $7/night.

Great for car camp visit

Stayed here one night. For only $10 a night, it was ideal. Got hot showers and woke up with the mountains in view. The Taos Brewery next door was a fun spot for a few drinks as well. Staff was very friendly.

Fun, rocky road up the mountain

We drove up the road for a while to find a higher up spot. High clearance is definitely needed, dirt road turns into curvy, rocky road with multiple spots on both sides. There were plenty of already made fire pits. The views are amazing and even though we saw several other people, we never heard them. There was a few 4wheelers and dirt bikes. All around great, free spot.
