Decided to rent an RV and drive out to Palisade and stay at Basecamp during the early stages of Corona virus in April. The campground's services were limited but this was a great place to stay to get away from it all. The weather in April was beautiful. The RV portion of the campground doesn't have many trees however there's a tent area by the river that is well shaded.
This is a beautiful area and we loved riding bike on the Fruit & Wine Byway. The wineries were closed so we had to call ahead to get a few bottles to enjoy.
We found this campground for back to back weekend getaways from Denver. Only an hour away, Kelly Dahl feels like its much farther from the city. Nothing fancy here but nice to see recent renovations with new restrooms and bear lockers. The camp hosts take great pride in keeping the restrooms very clean 3x a day.
Most sites are exposed due to fire wiping out the trees but there are some sites that were spared and much preferable to those with no cover.
Sites are spread out. All in all a very nice FS campground.
This was our favorite campground this summer. We moved from Stillwater CG on the other side of the lake and what an improvement! CG is filled with pine trees.
Sunset is a small campground with all FCFS sites so it fills quickly. The lake was a 100 ft walk from our site and had a pebbly beach all to ourselves that was a great place to hangout for the afternoon. It made a super launching point for paddle boarding and canoeing.
Restrooms were very clean and each site has a new picnic table and latern hanger post.
This was a great find a few miles off Interstate 70. The site we had was as close to the creek one could get and we enjoyed sitting out listening to the flowing water.
The camp managers, Dawn and Earl, went the extra mile to make our week enjoyable and checked in on us daily to see if we needed firewood or anything else.
They offer full hook ups, cabins, tent sites. Small store on site with limited supply of camping goods.
Glenwood Springs is nearby. Also not far to see some amazing water falls at Rifle Falls State Park.
This CG is a great location to enjoy activities on Lake Granby with an onsite marina and nice beaches. Also jumping off point for a trip into Rocky Mt Nat'l Park and many hikes into the park from Grand Lake or Arapaho Bay.
The CG's only downside is the wide open exposure to sun and wind. There's no trees in the upper sites - but in return you get great 360 degree views.
We loved this campground. The host welcomed us immediately with a fishing report - there were a LOT of trout in the lake.
CG is nicely wooded, quiet and sites spaced nicely apart. There are great hiking trails from lake to lake in the area. Visitor center is on the opposite shore from the CG but was closed due to Corona virus.
This campground is a great place to stay if you want to be walking distance to everything in Ouray. Once settled in we didn’t use the truck to travel anywhere for three days. The CG is on the Ouray rim trail which was a nice hike.
Located directly beneath cliffs, the CG is in the shadows early which was nice in cooling our trailer from temps near 90.
Sites are very close together but this is expected at a property like this in the middle of town.
We arrived an hour before the allowed check in time and were told our site wasn’t ready. An hour later we returned and given a site in a grassy area that was completely empty an hour before. I understand there needs to be check-in rules but still annoying.
The CG is not in the best location right next to the municipal airport but makes up for it with lush green grass throughout and an open feel.
The highlight of the stay was our visit by the resident goats– only two of the three like cauliflower. There’s also donkeys in a corral that get constant attention from guests.
Thankfully we were able to get a site here on short notice over Fourth of July weekend. The campground is situated below the road keeping road noise low. The entrance is at a busy location on the highway and steep so take care while entering. We had a nice site within eyeshot of the river. There's trees across the property and sites are spaced nicely. As expected there were many families camping for the holiday weekend and it could have been a party filled night but things quieted down at sunset. There is an open area above the CG that turned out to be a great place to watch Salida’s fireworks. The campground manager was very friendly and good host. We enjoyed our stay.
This campground is in a great location. Its close enough to BV for a quick trip to town and set back off the highway enough to make it quiet. Views abound everywhere in the valley here and this campground joins the fun. Most sites are on varying elevations up a hillside so we weren't looking right at our neighbors. The ground were very clean and facilities kept up nicely. This campground, like most KOA's, is great for families.
