Beautiful but mosquito ridden

Great spot all to ourselves near the Sultan Sea. Sunset was beautiful, the smell was a bit strong off the sea, but then the mosquitos came and they were brutal! Tiny little suckers that could come through the screens.

Great spot for an early start to check out Slab City and the morning bombing practices from the air force base nearly (very dystopian!)

Great base camp for hiking

Many campgrounds close to each other but not on top. Cast meadow to the west is wonderful for morning walk with coffee. Hikes nearby from beginner to expert take you to alpine lakes.

Convenient + Beautiful loop

Pull off the road right up the hill from Lone Pine. Great place to camp at the end of a long drive. Wake up to breakfast in Lone Pine at the Alabama Hills Cafe (yum!) and then drive up to Eastern Sierras for an early morning start.

Boondocking (not in KOA campground)

Carrizo plain in the “off season” is great! Cast open spaces and views. Not a lot of people, but tons of beauty.

Quite on a cold night, busy on holidays

We enjoyed a spur of the moment night away in our four wheel camper at Nira on a chilly (28f) night. We had the place to ourselves! Trail head directly from parking lot and campground. Like most of the Los Padres near cities, I’m sure it gets super busy on holiday and nice weather weekends.
