My husband and daughter and I love to camp and hike wherever we can.

Big site with great hiking and fishing!

Pack your hiking shoes and fishing gear! (Don’t forget that trout stamp) we hiked two different trails and had so much fun! Be carful with little ones as it’s very rocky and steep drop offs! We decided to keep our 3 year old in the carrier on dads back (especially hiking the chimney rock hike to insperation peak)

We where campsite 36 with our small camper and it was plenty big! My parents where in 38 with a HUGE camper and also had plenty of room! We visited in October so the campground wasn’t completely full but most sites where occupied and it was still quite. We had a great time!

no phone reception

huge park with tons to do!

Unfortunately we were completely rained out for most of our trip but we were able to enjoy some of it! We went to the head waters right away in the morning which was amazing since there was hardly anyone there. The only down fall was the gift shop and cafe were not open. We can back later to enjoy the gift shop and had some pizza at the cafe. it was as pouring rain while we went and it was still busy so I can’t imagine how bad it would be on a normal Saturday!

We camped at site 232 and I wouldn’t reccomend the site unless you had small tent. It was a small site and had a weird slope down with a clearing. Not sure what it was for.

Drive slowly people drive like maniacs!

cute little campground on the water!

A perfect little campground right in grand marais. If you attended the Norfolk house this is the perfect place to stay and you can walk right over! Either way check out the Norfolk house! It’s a simple campground but you can’t beat the location!

Everyone should come here at least once!

This is my favorite place in all of Minnesota! I spent my babymoon here and hiked it 6 months pregnant, and 4 years later we take her here now to play! We spend hours here and we love taking our daughter to play! being able to climb on the falls and the hiking around the falls makes this one of my favorite places to come!

beautiful park with lots to explore!

we had so much fun playing on the river and exploring the park! Everything is right there and the river is so pretty! Despite the rain we had a great time! Because of the rain we went to the eagle center near Wisconsin. A must see if your looking for something indoors!

A hidden gem!!!

Second favorite campground in Minnesota!!

We arrived Friday to a not so helpful girl. I told her my name and ask to check in and was promptly asked for a site number, I couldn’t remember exactly what it was. I said 72 and she rudely said we only have 34 sites. Figuring you only have 34 site I figured it would be easy to find my name. 15 seconds later she told me it was site 27. Not sure why she could find it earlier but no big deal. We were given no map, no information just a site number… our site was decent size private from our neighbors. The following day it rained, and rained, and rained so we greatly appreciated the elevated tent pad!! Because of the rain we headed to a trail listed on one of the maps I picked up, because it was a short hike. We had to drive into sandstone and drove down a dirt road (reccomend an suv or truck) to get to the trail. The drive to get to this trail is not marked so just trust the directions and look on google maps. We made it to the end of the road and a gate closing the road and off the the left is the trail with a little parking spot. I was so disappointed to see the amount of trash laying on the trail. I suspect it’s a local hang out for teens. We hiked on this trail for a bit and saw the rapids if you climb down on the rocks to the island be careful it’s slippery!!! Since it was raining we had the entire place to ourselves it was so beautiful and peaceful. We later hiked the self guided trail and it was so beautiful! Because it had rained the mini waterfalls (streams) where like something out of a story book! I thought the history part of it would be boring but it was anything but! Read the signs and pick up a map! Seeing something and being able to touch something that old was amazing! I can’t wait to go back next year already my husband has already said we are staying a week instead of just a day!

postives: Small campground but still very private! GREAT hiking! It’s absolutely beautiful here, straight out of a story book! Clean bathrooms and showers. Plenty of primitive bathrooms as well!

Negatives: Not so friendly staff, trash and graffiti on trails, our shower QUICKLY ran out of hot water which I wouldn’t really mind but my toddler refused to shower and cried about being cold.

a must see state park!!

Very spacious and private campsites!! Lots of wildlife!

This campground is massive! Our campsite was on the farthest loop and was very private! We saw sooooo many deer some even walking right through campsites! You can hear coyotes, raccoons and very loud owls😂

We spent an entire day hiking and it was decent hiking along the river, some of the trails where a little confusing and trying to figure out where we at, but we made it just hiked a little further than we wanted to😂! This seems to be the hot spot for horses and if we go back I definitely want to do the horseback riding right outside the park! DRIVE to the visitors center from the campsites it’s a bit away!

Postives: Very private and remote, Lots of wildlife, friendly staff, okay hiking. The canoe rental place wasn’t open so we can’t comment of water activities!

Negatives: Only one shower house and we had to drive there, the primitive toilet smelled so bad it burned!! It needed to be emptied and wasn’t the entire time we were there. This isn’t a comment on this state park but because we where no where near a real bathroom and we have a toddler who wears a diaper/potty training there are no trash cans in the primitive toilet it could create a problem if you had a little one or if your a women😉

overall it was good camping trip, but if we did come back we would definitely camp closer to the shower house.
