After the fires in Northern California prevented us from camping in El Dorado County, we made a quick decision to go south a bit to San Luis Reservoir. Basalt Campground was practically empty for the entire weekend we were there. The campsites are spaced apart generously and the sites are huge. Each site has running water to wash dishes and/or hands and feet. The restrooms were very clean and well stocked and the showers were great. I would definitely return here for another getaway!
I wasn’t expecting much due to being in the valley and looking to be pretty run of the mill online. I was pleasantly surprised. Sites were a good size and were tucked down a slight hill from the road which was great for privacy. Bathrooms were kept very clean and well stocked.
Campground is very high on a mountain, up a single lane dirt road. Sites had plenty of shade cover. No water, no cell service. Town of Carmel Valley is about a 45 minute drive down the mountain. Poison oak throughout the campground, even in the sites. Insects are completely overwhelming. Swarms of gnats that are on and around you constantly even with bug spray. Yellow jackets swarm anytime food is exposed. Not an enjoyable experience at all.
Always booked up on recreation.gov but I was able to snag a single night in the middle of the week due to a cancellation. It was well worth the three hour drive one way even for a single night! Beautiful views, perfect weather, camp host was very friendly and helpful! Looking forward to being able to go back!
