Redwoods at the Beach!

This spot is a favorite in Big Sur's magical beachside forest. Books up well in advance, so last-minute reservations are quite the long-shot. Lower sites are more exposed, but get the benefit of the ocean sounds and rocky beach proximity. Upper sites are tucked back into redwoods, with a little stream nearby.

Hike to the kilns! It's fun to see them still standing, and the CCC keeps the trail in fantastic condition!

Nice County Campground on the Reservoir

We're locals here, so it's nice to have this option for a quick weekend "stay camp" if we feel like getting out of the house.

Many different campsite types, reasonably priced. The primitive sites we favor are set back from the water a bit, which is a bit of a bummer.

A few hiking trails nearby, and a full-blown adventure/ropes course is just outside the park, if you feel like ponying up the cost for that added fun!

Almost To The Top!

There are a handful of parking pads just below the Hi Mountain Lookout. Pit toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings only. No water. AT&T cell service, but no Verizon (as of Summer 2016). Partial view through the trees out across the Los Padres National Forest, depending on the site selection.

Higher ground clearance is recommended getting up here! The dirt fire roads can get pretty rutted. AWD/4WD make the trek up a breeze, tho!

Flies can be INCESSANT in the shade during the hotter months…

Great Spot Outside Lassen

We rolled in here late at night without reservations, and were happy to find a few sites still available! Mosquitoes were out in full force thanks to the proximity to the creek, and the cattle from the ranch next door were mooing all night. Charming! The pit toilets were exceptionally disgusting, so I recommend walking further to the flush bathrooms.

Book In Advance!

This campground can only be accessed from the East entrance to Pinnacles National Park, and fills up fast on weekends. Amenities aren't the newest, the stinky bathrooms had a line for the coin-op showers, and the camp store/registration counter/visitor center is only open from 9:30am-5pm. A lot of tent campers paid extra for RV sites, as they were the only ones available. Shade is hit-and-miss.
