Hospitality on the river

Walter's Camp is a great launch point up the Colorado River. I don't own a boat but if I did this would be a regular spot. The drive in is a couple miles on dirt road. Take it slow if you have to but chances are you can get there just fine! You may get some excitement from other guests enjoying the river but all in all this is a relaxing campground with hospitable hosts. The grounds are well maintained and the local campground dogs will greet you with open paws. Bring your dog and fishing pole and head into their general store for some cold beer. You'll have a good time! P.s. 5mph speed limit within the campgrounds is necessary due to foot traffic, especially from kids playing.

Convenient & mystic

Say hello to the cows for me! They gave me a warming welcome which set the tone for this ideal overnight spot. I visited in February which was most likely the reason why I had the area to myself. I appreciated the rough feel of the lake and how close the road was. There is a restroom and a dump bin at the entrance which locked this spot in for convenience. I didn't have any trouble coming in and out and I loved waking up with open space and the sounds of the lake shore. One big word of caution! Winter winds here almost blew the tent over with my pup and myself inside. Although occasional gusts may seem obvious for location and time of year I would have lost that tent had I not been inside. Coming back soon to launch into Kernville from here.

Well earned intimate views

To all my fellow 2wd roughians, your first time grinding through Painted Canyon Trail may be slightly tense but exciting none the less. Words of caution shared among these former reviews are accurate and helpful. Loose sand will sometimes look firm and firm sand may look loose in places and your wheels could bury fast in the wrong pockets. Every turnout into an open spot will require some inspection but it's up to you to figure out what you can and can't do. With that being said, a lot of open spots would've buried me so I played it as safe as I could although I probably could've pushed a little more. Be smart, have fun, maybe put on some Neil Young and soak in the sunshine.
