Great location, setting and rustic campground

Mt. Desert Campground offers a car camping experience that is rustic enough to feel like you are enjoying the outdoors but not too much that you feel like you are roughing it. The location is great for accessibility to adventures to different parts of Mt. Desert Island but also is a great setting at the top of Somes Sound to be okay with just hanging out at the campground for a day. The main gathering spot (aptly named the Gathering) offers a spot to get some tasty treats in the morning and evening as well as wifi. The cold brew coffee in the morning is a nice treat while camping.

We have stayed at Nickerson 2 summers in a row for 5 nights in August. Campsites had a good amount of space between them so you were not on top of each other. We have stayed in area 6x. The park has a number of kettle ponds to swim and boat in. There is one near area 6x which was a 10 minute walk from our campsite. It is such clean water! and the bonus is that there have only been about 20 people there at the most because one can only walk to it. There are bike paths in the park and the park is located on the main bike trail on the Cape. We have biked to ice creams shops, restaurants and a nearby beach. We also came/went to the Cape off weekend days so we did not have to deal with traffic getting to and from the Cape in the summer weekends. We loved our stays at Nickerson.

We have camped here in early June for the past 2 years. The campground is small and in June it is relatively quiet. The ocean side sites are great, right on Casco Bay!! Some sites are under trees while some of the sites are open. There is also a playground and small beach. The only downside is the bath houses are a bit of a walk from the ocean side sites so just plan accordingly. However, they are clean. As it is a town park, there are many people who come for the day to use the playground, beach and picnic sites but as the campground is beyond the day use area, there is never an issue with too many people around. Downtown Freeport, with lots of stores and LLBean, is within a 5 minute drive.
