This is a beautiful campground. It is set just beyond the sand dunes with several trails connecting the two. You MUST take a walk down into the dunes after dark… simply breathtaking. Bring a flashlight, though! Some sites provide shade and some do not, so be prepared. They have a small camp store where you can purchase goods like firewood (when there aren’t any fire bans).
I’ve camped here many times and enjoy it. It’s hard to get to and impossible for big rigs, but if you’ve got somewhat of an adventurous spirit, it’s worth the trek. It’s right on the arkansas river, also right across from the road, which is a negative as it can be loud with road noise. There’s one vault toilet, so it’s really more like dispersed camping… though there are fire rings and tent pads now. Be careful to check local fire restrictions. You have to make a reservation online… and there is no cell service at this location.
This campground is so cool!!! I prefer to be in nature while camping and this is it! You really feel like you’re in the desert. Sites provide some privacy and aren’t right up on each other. Quiet and relaxing. Good accessibility to the NP. I would definitely return.
The amenities at this place are great for the price. Nice pool, hot tub, laundry, bath & showers. There is a mix of full time residents, part time, and traveling campers. Apparently not the best place if you have kids though… not even sure if they “allow” them. Sites are typical RV park style… not much to them/no privacy… but if this is what you’re after I’d imagine you’ll be happy.
