Quiet, well maintained.

I camped two nights in January 2022 in the A-loop for tents. Plenty of space between sites. Even though it was January, mosquitoes could not be ignored. Once I applied bug spray they didn’t bother me again. My site was unshaded, but others had shade trees. Wasn’t a big deal in January (plus I wasn’t around the camp during the day) but being in the direct sun would be miserable in summer. Bathrooms were clean and plentiful. Stargazing was excellent. Small convenience store about .5 mile away. Quiet hours started at 10 pm, but the area was pretty quiet much earlier. Pretty much by sundown.

Stayed nearby during quarantine .

CA was on lockdown (01/2021), but remote camping was allowed far enough off paved roads. We set up a tent about two miles from Stovepipe Wells on the Mosaic Canyon Road just before the trailhead. Could see some lights from State Route 190 but not much else. Nice view of the Mesquite Dunes upon daybreak. The ground we stayed on was rocky, but no problem once we set up the air mattress and tent. Gorgeous views upon waking up.

No one for miles

A long, gravel road lead me here on a quiet weeknight in October 2020. Crept in driving a Honda about 15 mph on the 20+ mile dirt road. Just when I thought I couldn’t go any further, that I was hopelessly lost, I saw the sign pointing to the campground. Got out, set up a tent and started a fire (it was in the 30s upon arrival, just under freezing at day break). Absolutely pitch black out. There was no one here and no one for miles. Great view of the Milky Way. Totally silent.

Now that I know it’s here (and not just a beacon on the map), I’d definitely return.
