Amazing

We chose this campground based on the reviews from another Dyrt member and decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint. This is a smaller SP campground, just one loop and a few sites along a creek. The camp host was knowledgeable and friendly. We stayed in site 42, which was not the greatest layout (electric was on the wrong side of the site for our door and canopy to open to the fire ring), but our time there more than made up for it. The campground was very quiet in the loop (the creek sites tended to be a bit noisier) and the bathrooms were the absolute cleanest bathrooms we’ve seen in a state park. There were some great trails in the area. Our family of six made the trek up the Flat Rock Trail to the overlook. A six mile round trip with a 1200 ft climb. Spectacular views. The park rangers had an owl program on Friday night and ended up calling in several screech owls. Very cool to hear their eerie cries in the woods. There was also a chaplain who came around offering a Sunday morning church service at the amphitheater. All in all, we loved this campground and after making notes of some better laid out sites, we cant wait to return!

Nice weekend trip

This campground was great for a weekend trip. Staff is very nice, shower bathroom was clean. Our site was a bit cramped, but for a weekend away, it was just enough. Beautiful hiking in the area, which was the reason we went out there in the first place!

A Favorite

This is one of our favorite campgrounds. We camp with a pop up camper and stay in loop C. Bathrooms are clean, sites are spacious, and we’ve never had an issue with noise, even when all the sites were full. There’s a lot to do in the area. Tons of hiking, exploring along the lake, and Gettysburg within a 30 minute drive.

Peace and quiet close to home

We love this campground. We’ve stayed twice in the electric loop and both times had a quiet stay. The campsites are typically spacious and spaced out well. Bathrooms are clean. There is so much to do right in this area as well. Lots of hiking. We highly recommend the nearby arboretum and don’t miss the opportunity to see the aviary at the park office. The ranger was so nice there and went in to each enclosure to handle and show us owls, eagles, and falcons. A highlight of the trip!

Great State Park Camping

We decided to stay a weekend at Susquehanna based on the reviews on the Dyrt and it’s closer proximity to home. We arrived and were greeted by super friendly rangers who gave us the lay of the land. We found the rangers to be very knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife, plants, and trees in the park. They had two display tables full of flora and fauna by the check-in station set up for kids and adults alike to glean some knowledge. On one night while we were there, there was a program run by the rangers where kids could learn about some common native and invasive species.

We hiked the Green Trail, which had a sign saying it was ‘very difficult’, but we found it to be no problem for our crew of seven kids aged 3-10 and four adults. We only passed one other hiker. We saw some champion trees, lots of deer, and had some run ins with more than a few spotted lantern flies. One ranger told us they have nine champion trees in the park, we’d love to go back and hike to find the others.

With only two loops, the sites were fairly spaced out with lots of trees between them. We had a spacious electric site for our pop up and camped with friends who had a nice level, secluded tent site. We hardly ever heard any neighbors and all was quiet at night. Each loop shares a bathhouse, and there are some portable toilets spaced around the loop, too. The facilities were cleaned every morning. They even have a large laundry utility sink in the bathhouse should you need it. The only downside we found was that showering at prime time (around 8 or 9 pm) led to very little hot water. A small price to pay for good camping and hiking!

Wonderful Family Campground

The minute we arrived at Camp Taylor we knew we were in for something special. Our campsite was very spacious and backed up to a creek, and we appreciated the effort the owners made in keeping all of the sites private and spread out from each other. We booked this trip based on the wolf preserve that is on the grounds (separate fee and reservation), and not only was the tour fantastic and informative, hearing wolves howling from our campsite is something we will never forget.

We expected the tour to be the highlight of our trip, but we were so wrong. We spent four days at Camp Taylor, never left the grounds, and filled our days with the perfect amount of activity and relaxation. The kids immediately took to exploring the creek and woods behind our campsite and of course they loved the small arcade and playground. There is a cute 9-hole mini golf course on the premises, and after renting clubs and balls, had one of the best times of our whole trip laughing and competing for top spot. There was also a lake with a swimming beach, but we did not partake this trip.

We did some fantastic hiking here. One day we headed up past the wolf preserve to the Wildlife Lake. Another day we took the Mountain Trail up the side of Mt. Tammany (the trail goes 500 ft straight up the side, but our four kiddos under 10 were able to manage ok) and took the Fire Road Trail out to the Mt. Tammany overlook. Here you are afforded a great view of the Delaware Water Gap and Mt. Minsi across the river in PA. The whole hike was about 7.5 miles round trip and took our slow moving crew around 5 hours, but the views and wildlife were well worth it. We didn’t see any bear, but saw lots of bear scat, and passed a super chill doe and her two fawns casually grazing next to the trail.

The staff were super friendly and helpful. The camp store had a few necessities and importantly for us, frozen treats (which we used as a bribe for some of our less enthusiastic mini-hikers) and chocolate for s’mores (which we somehow forgot). The facilities were clean and well-maintained. We very much appreciated the separate family/handicapped shower with its own toilet and sink for helping our little ones. Quiet hours were strictly enforced, which we appreciated, but we also found that being so far away from other campsites made everything seem quieter and more secluded in general.

We felt like this was family camping at its finest. We’ve done a lot of great camping this summer, from state parks to privately owned campgrounds, and this was by far our favorite trip.

Amazing Place to Camp

We loved camping here. There is so much exploring to do. So much so, we made plans to come back really soon to do some more! We spent time at the awesome visitors center, the Shades of Death trail, the Boulder Field, the swimming beach, and spent lots of time hiking and taking in the beauty of this area. We enjoyed ourselves so much. Our campsite was nice, we rearranged the picnic table a little and had plenty of room for ten around our campfire. Plenty of trees for hanging hammocks. Our site was a little close to others, but we booked late and needed to be in the pet loop as we were camping with friends with dogs. They were in our neighboring site, so privacy didn’t feel like so much of an issue. The only downside is the bath houses. While clean and maintained, there is only one bath house for two big loops. And that bath house only has three showers and three toilets for each gender. Not a big deal midday, but certainly an issue first thing in the morning! We ended up using our pop up camper cassette way more than we normally like to. But all in all it was a wonderful weekend and we can’t wait to come back for a longer stay!

Good Family-oriented Campground

This campground is a good campground to go to if doing all the things is what you’re after. There is so much to do. A splash pad, a lake with rentals, several playgrounds, hiking nearby, disc golf, and lots of activity. The campsites themselves however are fairly close together and open with little privacy. We were looking for a little more privacy and relaxation, so we didn’t use many of those amenities. We lucked out with a lot that was slightly more secluded on the end of a road, but paid for it with a very sloped lot that made sitting at the picnic table or camp chairs a bit of a struggle. Also just for anyone planning a trip, make sure you have a long hose for water hookup. Water pumps were spaced pretty far and we needed at least a 100 ft hose to reach. I don’t want to give a bad review, this is a great campground for more of that resort-style feel where kids and adults alike can make new camp friends, but it just wasn’t what we were looking for on this trip!
