High (8,200) and deep—dramatic landscape carved by Gunnison River. Wonderful hiking trail along the rim and interesting plant community of the high plateau. Be prepared for any type of weather. We had a wild thunder, lightning and wind storm with violent downdrafts—typical for this country. Absence of light pollution means awesome night skies!
This campground is in the National Monument and is along the gorgeous Green River. It has clean flush toilets (lighted at night), potable water, fire pits, picnic tables and a variety of sites. You can camp a few feet from the river or walk a short distance to it’s sandy, rocky banks. Great place for birding, a short drive to the Park Service Visitor Center which is worth spending at least a few hours at! Take the shuttle to the Quarry for an entire bank exposing dinosaur bones and more.
Outside Moab you can find a string of campgrounds along a scenic drive along the Colorado River. I tent camped at Grandstaff which is sandwiched between the river and the road like all campgrounds along the corridor. That fact was diminished by the gorgeous riparian setting with the river winding through fantastic rock formations. Lots of bird life including hummingbirds.
Just outside Austin in the beautiful Pinyon Juniper forest in Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It’s right off the two lane road so you’ll have some road sounds. It was a perfect stop at the end of a day driving with a nice variety of campsites to choose from, toilets and water. The landscape here is sweeping and stunning. You could set up camp and drive into the lovely town of Austin for a bite to eat or other provisions. I was tent camping and there were a couple on motorcycles and two RVs.
This is 6,200 foot elevation 8 miles outside Wells, Nevada. Peaceful camping in an aspen grove with fire pits, toilet, trash receptacle. If you’re a birder it’s got high desert birds, raptors. I saw my first Lewis’s woodpecker, watched a Harrier hunting, a flock of soaring, bug eating Common Nighthawks, deer everywhere. Stunning views of the terrain. Designated tent pitching squares, kinda rocky but fine with a protective footprint.
