Great get away.

Well taken care of and close to the city. Trails range from a short walk to an endless combination.

Backpacking sites

We packed in and stayed at one of the backpacking sites. We highly recommend the Pickle Creek section for a good variety. Trail includes tough climbs and rocky downhills. Included is a photo from one of the amazing overlooks.

Best floating

The best float trip site. They have a family section if you prefer to be away from the louder bunch.

True to its name

There are hogsā€¦ beautiful lake with great camp sites available. The beach area provides a family friendly place to swim. We hiked the entire trail from the campground and ended with just over 14 miles.

Hunters

Not really a knock on the area, but came across some hunters who fired a little too close for comfort

Iron ranger

First come first serve. You will have to get there early to ensure a spot. Great hiking and access to the Ozark Trail. Great views for early mornings. The site we got set up at had plenty of trees to set up hammocks, but some of the sites were not set up from hammock camping.

Iron ranger

Big and spacious sites. First come first serve. You can fit multiple tents on one site. Amenities are limited especially during the off season. The closest town consists of one gas station (who serves a great breakfast)

A drive to the shut ins

We have stayed in cabins and tent camped. Beautiful spot, but can be very heavily populated

Favorite

We've been to most of the parks in the stl region, this is one of our favorites. Great hiking, boating, fishing, everything can be found here.

Float trips

If you have ever been to a float trip camp siteā€¦ that is exactly what this is

Big loop

Stayed here for the 100 mile race, even busy it provided plenty of space

It is what it is

State park, sites pretty close together. Cave accesses have been shut down due to the an issue with bats. They do offer floating serves, during one of the trips they did not allow us to float because of the river level. However you can drive up to sandbars.

Hummmmm

Amazing park close to the city. Great lake and hiking trails. Access to the Katy and bike trails. Camp site are large, warning that some are hike in and not car camping. The only issues is the loud hummmmm of the power plant can be heard in the night.
