Stopped here to spend the night in July because it was cooler (~7500 ft elevation), free, quiet and beautiful. It's just a place to camp in the National Forest. No amenities.
Found a site here at the last minute even though every other site in the park was taken. This place is almost always full even if you attempt to find something months in advance. Sometimes the only way to find a place here is just to constantly check and see if something opens up at the last minute.
A pretty nice decent place to camp if you have everything you need with you and you need to be near Enchanted Rock State Park.
Cars/trucks coming and going all day/night kicking up tons of dust because they're too lazy to just walk to the bathroom or set up their own bathroom. That's not what I call camping. If you have to start up your truck and drive down the road kicking up tons of dust so that it only takes 30 seconds instead of 3 or 4 minutes by foot, you're not camping. Terry, the hostess is a wonderful person and the place is beautiful, but The joy is dampened by the clowns that think they're camping by driving their trucks around every time they have to go to the bathroom. Terry, the hostess did mention that it's better than the alternative of having some of these party-going campers going to the bathroom in the woods and at the campsites.
This is the north part of San Angelo State Park. I camped here the last weekend of January. Other than being quite windy during the day, the weather was gorgeous. Chilly at night with temperatures in the thirties but the days were sixties and seventies and sunny. I didn't get to do much exploring because I went to San Angelo to pick up something on Monday morning and thought I would use this trip to test out some gear. The parking sites are great for either a tent or small RV. This was ideal for my setup which is a rooftop tent on my SUV. There were some nice large trees over many of the campsites and there were clean concrete picnic tables with a sun or rain cover above that.
