Lucked out finding this spot on a rainy day but a good national forest campground with nice sites . Multiple things to do around the area hike , bike 4 wheel or see St. Elmo mining town .
Only stayed one night and it poured rain as we had to sleep in the truck as water pooled up in our site . Either way was a nice campground.
This is a rugged road not meant for cars as posted at signs saying 4 wheel drive high clearance vehicles required . Also recommend better than stock tires . I have a 3 inch lift and 34 inch off road tires . It’s a beautiful high elevation area almost 10k ft in elevation. Primitive spots which there are only a handful but beautiful, quiet and worth the drive . Be aware people get stuck on this road weekly and need to be pulled out . Bonus is it’s close to Nederland if you need supplies .
We arrived looking for a spot on a Friday evening and managed to find a spot way back in the dispersed area beyond the permitted camp sites . Great area to pull in with a truck but not needed on the main road in . Many rock fire rings around to find spots . It is an area of four wheelers and off road riding so that does create some noise by camps if that bothers you or you want yo partake that .
Drove a long ways to find out the gate isn’t open like prior post of members and will not open until June 15 on the steamboat side as posted at gate. We drove to the east side from Walden to find out you can’t even make it to the gate as the road has way too much snow cover yet even with a 4 wheel drive . That side isn’t expected to open until mid July . But plenty of camping on the east side leading up to the pass .
The long gravel road in is very rough with potholes to say the least but worth the drive in . At the end of the road is the campground which is very nice but we didn’t stay there due to being full . Along the road leading up to the campground are some spots off to the side in the woods that are great as well with more privacy than the campground and are FREE .
I’ve camped here many times and also “tried “to camp many times as it’s first come basis . Multiple spots off the popular river which consists of brook trout . A vault style bathroom on site . Be very bear aware and keep things clean and out of site . Great area half way down the honeymoon trail a must see in the fall color change !
