All Dirt Roads Lead to……

Mortimer Campground does not disappoint! Hiking, fishing, swimming, and waterfall splashing abound on, and around, this campground. Many of the campsites are situated along Thorps Creek, so the sound of the creek can lull you to sleep. We stayed on site #6, which was on the creek. Two trailheads are on the campground, one of which is a beautiful and easy hike to a small waterfall. Be prepared for zero cell service and a dirty vehicle….NC HWY 90 turns into a gravel highway just outside of Lenoir. Will definitely be on my “Must Visit Again” list!

Loving the Lower Loop

We stayed on the Lower Loop of Badin Lake Campground, specifically site 16. There was a grassy area behind our site and a few other sites that was perfect for frisbee throwing or ball throwing/kicking. Some even used it for their tents. The lake was a stone’s throw behind our site, accessible via a well-worn path. Other sites are practically sitting at the edge of the lake. Sites 9 or 13 will be on my list for the next visit. Plenty of flora, so the sites are relatively private. Abundant shoreline for fishing and also lots of cover for the fish. No ice or firewood on site, so be sure to hit the Uwharrie Trails General Store on the way in.

Hidden Gem

Bandit’s Roost seems very popular with the RVers, but tent campers should check it out as well. Spacious sites, with fire pit and picnic table. Some primo sites are near and/or overlooking Kerr Lake. The sites are also relatively private and well-spaced. Be sure to chat with Marvin at the gate as well!

Wonderful Family Campground

We stayed in campsite #8 and were overjoyed with our choice. The campsite was nestled within the forest and was right next to the cool water of Flat Creek. The campsite was spacious and there were plenty of trees available for hammocks. Campsites #10 and #4 were next to us and those too seemed like primo spots, especially campsite #4 due to even closer and easier access to Flat Creek. The sites are relatively private with only the sounds of the rushing creek water and cool mountain breezes to keep you company.
