We wanted to try someplace close to Atlanta so this was a good choice. However the water was very low in the Lakes if you wanted to Boat or Fish. Also, the sites do not offer much privacy. Our fire pit was literally at the far end of our site (#111) which seemed odd. We did have a nice view of the Lake and it was even better after a few folks checked out.  Bathrooms were not very clean and did not have soap at the sinks. There is not much to do here other than Lake activities. (no Hiking). It was nice to walk along the lake edges (sandy beaches) with the Dogs.

Great State Park only 1.5 hours from Atlanta. We stayed in site 502 which was a good pull through spot. We noticed that most of the sites are not super private- it would be great if there were some low shrubbery in between sites (lots of very nice mature trees but not much down low to provide privacy). All areas were well taken care of and very clean (including the restrooms).  We really appreciated that each camping area Host had firewood to sell! Try and figure out where your campsite is PRIOR to going to the Park as there are two entrances and one entry is closer to campsites 1, 2, 3 and another entry is closer to campsites 4, 5, 6. The hiking trails were very nice.  We saw a good variety of birds including the very large Pileated Woodpecker. A group of white tailed deer also came very close to our campsite- one of the photos shows how nicely they blend into the woods!

This is just under 2 hours from midtown Atlanta. The setting is lovely and I am sure it's a 'must see' during the leaf changing season as most of the forest is mature hardwoods. We had a pull through site overlooking the lake. The restroom facility closest to our site was closed but there was another facility a short walk away. It was a cold weekend so the heaters in the restroom buildings were very much appreciated.  About half the campsite was full so it was very quiet and relaxing. There were an abundance of birds in the area (for you bird watchers). We did the hike to the Fort and Fire Tower from a nearby parking area. It's a relatively easy 30 minute hike up.  There is a longer more challenging hike from the campsites but we were not up for that this trip. We had one dog with us, so I'd say this place is very dog friendly. Apparently there is a lot of black bear activity in the area but we did not see any this time. *Interesting fact: black bears do not hibernate like other more northernly bears so be informed and aware.  We will absolutely return to this wonderful park. This is off the beaten path but worth it. Make sure you have groceries before turning onto 177.  Once inside the camping area it is very quiet and peaceful. The sites are spread out pretty well and most have foliage between them to provide privacy. We were in 'back-in spot' #5.  Each site comes with fire pit and picnic table. They do sell firewood at the Trading Post along with a few essentials.  The "Dark Sky" designation was the draw for us and the night sky was indeed spectacular.  No bug issues for us as it was mid January however it was pretty chilly at night (30 degrees). The bathrooms were a short walk away however no heaters so on a cold weekend be prepared! A neighboring camper brought a dog that barked at every opportunity, but otherwise we really enjoyed our time at this park. There are nice flat walking trails, a great playground for kids, and canoes/boats for rent at the Trading Post to head out into the Okefenokee. Overall a great spot that we will definitely return to.

This was the first stop after picking up our Caravel Airstream (from Airstream of Tampa). The campground is quaint, clean and easy to find however the spots are a bit tight and spaced fairly closely together. "Backing in' to spot #49 was a bit of a challenge as this is a fairly new hobby for us! Everyone we met was super friendly. The campsite has their own dock (next to the Trading Post) where you can rent canoes and kayaks. You can see manatees and numerous native birds.  We will absolutely be back!
