When I got to the location there were signs posted for no overnight parking/camping. Not sure if there was another area, but I asked around and a couple people that were chatting in the employee parking lot pointed me down the street to another paid RV lot.
This is a great little spot with a lot of level area if you are self-contained and don't need to hook up to anything. Not a great place for tent camping though, think of it more as a great desert parking lot with a view. There are plenty of picnic tables and fire rings available though (be prepared and bring your own wood). There are several porta-potties and trash cans available as well and even some recycling bins available. The views here are solid, space was quiet aside from the occasional train. Would definitely recommend for a night. Cost was $10.
Good, clean Army Corps of Engineers campground. Sites are relatively flat, campground itself seems pretty open but surrounded by woods. Checking in at this campground is super simple, each site has a QR code that takes you straight to the recreation.gov listing. Stayed here two nights.
This was a great little free location to camp along the river. I was able to get the spot at the end of the lot that's surrounded by water on three sides. There's no electric here but there are little tables, fire pits, and lantern posts, as well as a couple dumpsters and a restroom. Sky was clear and cool the evening I stayed, would definitely camp here again.
Stayed here on Dec. 10, 2021 (yes the night of all the tornadoes throughout the Illinois/Kentucky/Tennessee area), I and everyone else at the campsite got pretty lucky, we were just outside the path of the main storms that did so much damage. The campground itself seems solid, but I will admit… I did not use many of the facilities that evening. The camp host at the entrance was super nice though. I can't remember the campsite number, it was near the restrooms at the back of the campground.
Stayed at spot A1 (near the entrance). Gorgeous little campground. I stayed here Dec. 9, 2021. Registration is just down the road and up the hill (take the main road west and a left at the fork). Facilities were clean, there was only one other camper there the night I stayed so it was super quiet, I will definitely stay here again on my next trip across Illinois. The only small bummer was the electrical box was locked when I got there, so I ended up dry camping. I was too tired to bother finding someone to unlock it. Slept great though.
Stayed here on Dec. 8, 2021. It was clean and well organized. It was a little difficult finding the pay box at the Southern Campground but I got there just after dark. The box was located next to the playground at the end of the loop of campsites. Overall, a nice place to spend the evening, would definitely stay again.
