Curtis Canyon Campground - Close to Town Camping

The perks of this campground would be the stunning views of the Tetons and that is it just outside of town (about a 15 minutes drive on dirt roads). If all of the campsites are taken there is ample dispersed camping (although some of it seems to feel like you are in a dirt parking lot). Again, the views can't be beat and the location is perfect if everything else is booked up or you don't feel like dropping the cash for a hotel in town.

Backcountry Camping Away From The Crowds

Cruising to the Maroon Bells? If you haven't booked a designated spot in advance at one of the 3 sites below the lake, odds are you won't find one when you roll in. Park at the overnight parking just below Maroon Lake, hike the 2 miles into Crater Lake and snag one of the 11 numbered campsites or find a flat spot for dispersed camping. Day visitors start to leave the area around 4pm and you will have all of the peace and quiet below the stars that you could want! Most people doing the 4 pass loop will skip Crater Lake, so finding a spot usually isn't hard. As of this year, bear canisters are required.
