Fantastic campground not too far from New York. Super quiet, private campgrounds nestled in the trees, right on a river. This is an anglers campground, so there was some serious fishing going on. Not many kids or partiers. We jumped in the river and got out of the heat. Easy to get a reservation. Favorite spot to camp outside the city. Also lots of little cabins if you dont want to rent camp.
For camping not to far from the city it's pretty alright. Right on a little river with a mix of spots out in the open or nicely nestled in the trees. Was able to get a spot last minute. The crowd was relaxed. Nobody partying it up too much. Lots of kids but not crazy. Wouldn't be my first choice, but wouldn't hesitate if other places were full.
Our one night in Sage Creek has to be one of my favorite campground camping memories and is probably #1 for experiencing the National Parks. It's a strange spot. Just a big circular drive with not trees, spots are sort of marked by tables, but it gets too crowded for people to limit themselves to one camper per table. It's enough of a drive out there and people get there at hours, that people will just crowd in even if its officially overfilled, not that there an easy way to tell if it is or not. So definitely not your typical camping experience. But it is a free place to camp in a national park and doesnt require any reservations. There was a prairie dog colony right in the middle of the campground. You wont see the typical bonkers badlands geological features on this side of the park, but the grasslands are gorgeous and the flat spot where the campgrounds are is nestled between hills that were fun to scamper up. No water or fires. Come for the camaraderie, not the isolation.
Nice river with lots of sites right on it. Campsites nestled in trees so pretty private. Campsites are a bit tightly packed for my taste, but a nice spot for sure.
Ggorgeous campground for looking across the grasslands or dunking in the stream. There are two main camping areas. We stayed in the more remote one, which meant further from the bathrooms, but worth it for the beauty and quiet. All the sites are very private. Nestled in trees on winding paths that lead down to a stream we absolutely took a dunk in as it was a very hot day. We didnt see the buffalo herd, but were only there for one night. Good birdwatching and I've never seen so many fireflies!
