Gaviota SP

After driving all day in torrential rains, we were happy to find some where to park. It is not allowed for anyone other than the town/city’s residents to park on city streets along the coast!! So travellers beware! We pulled into this place which incidentally was behind a grammar school(!!!) as is was getting dark. I was stunned at the $75,- overnight fee, too rich for my pockets! Was told that MAYBE there might be somewhere else 10-15 miles further south. We left to take our chances/hard earned cash elsewhere!

San Onofre SP

Another beautiful gem along the California Coast. Although not on or too near the beach, this campground is truly a lovely spot. All or most of the campsites boast a bit of privacy. While parked on asphalt, you actually get not so small, individual area surrounded by low trees and bushes all around. I appreciated being in my own space, as my puppers are huge attention seekers and will bark to make themselves known. But here, they tended their own business (sleeping) and I got some well deserved peace and quiet!

Tourist destinations

My experience was a wee bit different than anticipated… I arrived just prior to the forcasted “Pineapple Express”. Check in was painless, campground was not packed. Once parked the doggos and I enjoyed a few hours on the beach before sundown. It started raining cats and dogs during the night, 7am the rangers advised that evacuations could be in store….3pm we had to leave the campground and we were directed further down the coast to Oceana. The new campground was also flooded, but I was able to find a spot with a small patch for the dogs to do their thing without having to wade through water. The next day broke to a beautiful sunrise. The rangers and the park police were awesome, I felt completely at ease knowing that they were vigilant for our safety. Both campgrounds are beautiful in each their own way.

Smallish facility

Since the office was closed, I was unable to ask any questions and get a real time answer. Bummer. I got back on the road.

Laguna Seca

This is a beautifully maintained camping area. The campsites are arranged on the hills surrounding the Laguna Seca Racetrack. This enormous facility boasts of 800 campsites!! Checking in was easy, even though I arrived on a lark! The camp host was very helpful and friendly and full of interesting facts of the area. I would definitely recommend visiting here, even on off season when you can really enjoy how ginormous a facility it is. The steep hill up to the kiosk was a bit intimidating, but my 30’ Thor powered up it like a champ!
