Privacy and the calming sounds of the big lake at Superior Cart-In sites

The Superior Cart-In sites at Tettegouche are tough to beat: they feel private and at many of them, you are constantly reminded of the majesty of the North Shore, either with the sound of crashing waves or the site of the big lake itself.

It’s a long walk to some of the sites, but well-worth the effort. And the park provides wheeled carts to make the pack-in a little less arduous.

These sites make a perfect base-camp for exploring other sites along the shore, or for exploring all that Tettegouche offers, or both!

Beautiful little park with options to keep everyone happy

This park is a little gem. The campgrounds are on Annie Battle Lake, a peaceful little lake. A prairie walk away is Molly Stark Lake, which, though it allows motorized boats, is quite peaceful, and great for an afternoon of swimming and play and fishing.

Galloping Goose rentals is on the park, and rents out canoes, kayaks, and SUPs. Be sure to spend some time paddling around Annie Battle Lake.

Nearby Battle Lake has several grocery stores and restaurants and ice cream options.

We stayed at site 22, which is one of a few sites with lake views and access (I believe 24 might, as well). The sites are spaced out enough that it still feels private even though you can see other campers’ tents.

Far from the maddening crowd

Nice site with good communal area and fine pads. If you make it here, you’ll have hiked some 14 miles from Bowman and ~5000 ft in elevation over 2 miles. Enjoy your time here. You earned it.

Magnificent

It’s a good 7 mile hike in, but a beautiful hike and the destination is worth it. The site itself is right on the shore, with plenty of room for multiple parties to enjoy the lake at once.

As KOAs go, ok.

Sites are cramped, leaving no illusion of privacy. Bathrooms were cleaned every couple of hours, but highly trafficked thus quickly undoing the cleaning. Site was dirty - previous campers had left lots of micro trash near the fire pit and picnic table which killed the ambience.

Camp right on the lake shore

Camped in winter and lucked out with mild temps and clear skies. The site was just feet from the shore, and through the night we heard the soothing motion of the lake, with amazing star visibility overhead. The hike to the site was longish for a MN Park “backpack site”, particularly as I did so in the dark and with snowshoes. Except for the stairs, the terrain was fairly level.

Prairie camping with just enough privacy

The hike to the campground is short and grueling. A few of the sites are in wooded areas, but we stayed in one of the prairie sites. The terrain is just hilly enough - and in August - the grass long enough to give the sites a sense of privacy and seclusion.

No shortage of lovely trails at Afton to spend your day on.
