Stayed here after visiting great sand dunes national park! Big lot with lots of places to park. Some mosquitos at dusk but got better at night. stunning views and amazing sunset. Not to mention that at night you could see every star in the sky. I stargazed until it was time to go to sleep. Also a couple kangaroo rats were running around my campsite and it made me so happy, since I was really hoping to see one while I was in this area. Anyways, Zapata falls is also nearby if you’re looking for a quick little hike to kill some time while you stay here. 4 stars because there was a bunch of trash and cow patties everywhere. Also saw a horned lizard under a cow patty!
I stayed here on a Tuesday night. There were many open spots, each with a fire ring and a beautiful view. I drove way past the water tank and It looked like the sites were more private and spacious. Gets chilly at night, mosquitos weren’t too bad. I heard water, so I walked for about ten minutes down the mountain and found a beautiful little stream. Will definitely stay here again next time I pass through Breckinridge.
I really tried. Tires were spinning. Had to abort mission. Only accessible for 4wd
This was a great place to stop for the night. Plenty of campsites, fire rings, bathrooms, not to mention the beautiful view of the reservoir. At dusk it was mosquito city!! 🦟 swarms of the lil punks. But some bug spray and a citronella candle and I was good. Also there were way less mosquitos at night and in the morning. Camp host came by and let me know that this was the last free year as a free campsite.
I stopped at fritch fortress campground on my way to colorado. Nice clean spot with tables, bathrooms, showers, water. There was a lot of people and rangers driving by every so often so I felt very safe. This spot is not very secluded or quiet. But has an AMAZING view, I had a lovely time just looking out over the water and watching the sunset.
