I've been on a nationwide roadtrip for a few months that now and I have tent camped alone in many sites from Florida to Arkansas to, now, New Mexico. I chose Aguirra because of its close proximity to White Sands National Park. It is a First Come First Serve site and you must pay in cash. I was lucky to find a site in the afternoon. There are many sites. Over 40. I lucked out with 43 because it is huge! It's a jilly Rocky site with no one around me and several stone fire pits, a BBQ grill, and animal proof garbage can. There are Porta John's in close proximity. I have not found any water yet. Not sure. No RV hookups. But what do you expect for 7 bucks a night. I was here over Easter weekend so it got noisy with Fiesta music and someone throwing up across from my site at midnight! Whole families come here, jam their music etc. It's Easter so whatever. There is a covered picnic table and lots of tree cover to deal with the intense NM sun. I love how this place is at the end of an ascending, remote, windy road though. It's large enough that no rangers come and bug you for trivialities.

I would give it a 4-star rating for location but personally I don't like crowded, busy, noisy campgrounds by a major road. A tip: all sites are first-come-first-serve and you must use a machine and credit ir debit card to buy the spot. Arrive between 9 AM and 10 AM to find a spot, snag it, then, after 12, the machine will let you buy the ticket.

The sites come with water, electric, a grill, and restrooms with running water. No showers and no fire pits though although some had fires going anyway.

The campground is walking distance from all the beautiful trails that wind up and down the nearby hills. You can spend days exploring them.

As I said, the downside is how there are many day trip visitors, cars driving around looking for spots, and mist sites are closer to each other than I like although you can find a couple sites that feel more private if you are lucky.

I was lucky to have friendly and interesting neighbors there. The park looks small but some if the trails go on for up to 12 miles that I saw. There is a mountain tower worth paying to visit for a full panoramic view of the whole area.

For 23 bucks a night you get an electrical hookup which was great for my chevy volt. There's water at your site, a metal fire pit, showers and bathrooms nearby with outlets. It is gated with a code for the security conscious. The park has basketball courts, is near a large lake. There are vending machines nearby too. You can come and go at any time with the gate code but checkin was 6 or 7 PM. At night you can hear the nearby highway though.

Though the overall RV Camp is well organized, secure, and offers all the amenities (laundry, hookups, water, showers, and even an entry code), the tent camping is not ideal for me. Just my personal opinion, but I prefer tent camping in a quiet and dark area. But there are two towering lights on all night. Also you are near a freeway that goes and goes. The separation between tent sites is pretty ambiguous too. One table and one huge group fire pit and two BBQ for all tent campers. There is a woodsy trail running past the official tent area which has people coming and going giving the tent site the feel of being in the middle of a trail.

If it were me, I'd separate the tent site from the trail to reduce traffic. and also expand the tent site to include some if the nice looking, secluded little spaces past just the one stretch for tents only. I'd make those lights motion detecting instead of on all night. I'd set up several separate, private spots for each tent with its own table, fire pit.

But if you just need a cheap place to sleep and don't care about all that other stuff, then by all means.

Again, I am not criticizing this place. Just my personal opinion.

Again, this is a great spot because of the security and amenities but it's first and foremost an RV Park. The tent camping is an afterthought.

The place even has WiFi!
