Backcountry Site

LOC-4 is Heaven.

It's the type of site I feel like I don't even want to tell people about because I want to keep it to myself.

I discovered this site about 10 years ago and rediscovered it again this year.

It's the last site on the trail so you are completely secluded. There is a fire ring and a bear pole about 100 yards behind the site. The site is basically on a small stretch of land that goes out into the lake so you are surrounded by water on three sides of you with a great view of the bluffs and rocks in front of you. There is also two trees that are perfect for setting up a hammock. The water is calm and it is all sand going out into the lake and stays very shallow so you can walk very far out.

It's a lot of work to get there but it is totally worth it. Pack light.

Boat-In Site

We kayaked into this site and it took about 40 minutes from the parking lot launch area.

Site has a great view of the sunrise. There is a bare box and a fire ring with a metal grate for cooking.

Short walk from the shore up to the site. There is a rack so you can store your kayaks on land.

Definitely bring bug spray and check for ticks as I found two or three of them on me but we were also exploring through the heavy brush so it's no surprise.

Great place to vote in or kayaking. The island is definitely worth checking out as they have rocks that are great for sunbathing during the afternoon hours.

Site 9

The site is about 1.7 miles of a hike.

The path to the site off of the main trail is about 100 yds. You share an outhouse toilet with the two sites next to you (8 and 10) but those sites are far enough away where you all feel completely secluded.

It is a short walk down to the shore where it is very Rocky and there's a very cool tree with a curved branch on it that you'll love.

Each site has a bare box and a fire ring.

Backcountry Camping

Site 12 is amazing.

I have been coming to Newport for the last year and have stayed at sites 2, 9, and 12.

All sites have a fire ring, bear box, and access to a toilet.

Site 12 is my favorite of the three sites I've been to so far. It's a two mile hike, but I use a bike with a trailer which I highly recommend for any site if you don't like to hike your stuff in like me.

There are two trees that are perfect for putting up a hammock near the shoreline. You can watch the sunrise to the east of you, and take a short walk down the shore to watch the sun set to the west of you.

There is a private pit toilet for site 12, and the site is about a hundred yards off of the main trail so you definitely have privacy. Nobody really hikes this far down the trail at the park anyway.

The stars at this park are amazing on a dark night as it is a dark sky area with no man-made light within many miles.

Highly recommend Newport at any site if you are looking for a place that is more secluded.
